Garland Albert Sehlke, 100, passed away June 23, 2016 in Brenham.
Garland Sehlke was born April 14, 1916 in the Long Point Community of Washington County, to Otto and Clare Kammerer Sehlke. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith on June 11, 1926. On March 16, 1952, he was married to Lee Nell Wendt, and the couple made their home in Washington County.
A true patriot, he served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II, and was an eyewitness to a great moment in U.S. military history. Standing on the deck of his ship, using the scope on his rifle, he was able to watch Emperor Hirohito sign surrender documents on the U.S.S. Missouri on September 2, 1945. It was a moment the young soldier would remember forever.
