George Tommy Newman, 87, of the William Penn Community, husband of Louise Newman, passed away December 4, 2010 at his home, on the land that he loved. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Brenham, with Rev. Steve ponder officiating. Burial will take place in the Good Hope Cemetery in the William Penn community of Washington County. The family will receive friends and relatives Monday evening at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tommy was born to George and Elsie Emshoff Newman, and grew up in the Sandy Hill community, attending the Sandy Hill area school and Brenham High School. He proudly served his country during World War II in Germany and France. After returning home, he married Louise Rogers, and they built their home on the Newman land grant. Tommy lived there until his death, farming and raising livestock. He enjoyed going to the auction each week to be with his friends. He enjoyed going on the Sr. Saints trips and agricultural trips to different parts of the country. An active member of First Baptist Church, he served as deacon, and was a member of Scripture Searchers Sunday School, and the Sr. Saints. He also was a member of the American Legion and the DAV. Tommy enjoyed taking care of his cattle and horses, as well as spending time with his family. His great-grandchildren, Lane and Talyn Perez, were the love of his life. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Louise Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Ray Averitt; daughter-in-law Gayle Newman; grandchildren Kevin and Casey Newman, Misti and Daniel Perez, Matthew Averitt and fiancé Hannah Fick, and great-grandchildren, Lane and Talyn Perez. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elsie Emshoff Newmann; son Tommy Gene Newman; two infant siblings, one being his twin brother, Johnnie Newman; sister Dorothy Newman Fairbanks, brother-in-law Marshall Fairbanks and sister-in-law, Helen Rogers. Tommy enjoyed his many friends and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, especially his loving family. Serving as pallbearers are Kevin Newman, Casey Newman, Misti Perez, Daniel Perez, Matthew Averitt, Hannah Fick, Lane Perez, Talyn Perez, Marshall Fairbanks, Dale Fairbanks, Jimmie Fairbanks, Janice Hermann, John Kettler, and Odell Merryman. Honorary pallbearers are Ernest Witte, Norman Beckendorf, H. J. White, Charles Cottingham, and Pete Studhalter. Also serving as honorary pallbearers are members of the DAV, the Scripture Searchers Sunday School Class, and friends from the Brenham Livestock Auction.
