Gladys Krause

Gladys Jaster Krause, age 78, passed away June 13, 2004, in La Grange. She was born in Carmine, Texas, on Dec. 6, 1925, to Alfred Jim Jaster and Ida Emma Werner Jaster. She was baptized Aug. 11, 1926, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carmine by Pastor A.H. Falkenburg and was confirmed on Palm Sunday in 1939 by Pastor Henry Brunotte at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine. Gladys Krause married Lee A. Krause, Jr. on June 24, 1961, at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine by Pastor A.M. Hannemann. In her early years, Ms. Gladys delivered three paper routes from 2:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to earn money so she could go to high school and college. She helped her mother and grandfather Werner with the gardens and canned thousands of jars of vegetables for the Carmine Café. She also washed glasses, baked pies and worked as a waitress in the Carmine Café. Education was very important to Gladys. She gradated from Carmine Elementary in 1939 and Carmine Junior High School in 1942. In order to attend La Grange High School, she had to catch the bus to La Grange. She graduated from La Grange High School in 1944; from Blinn College in 1945; and from Sam Houston State Teachers College with a BA in 1948 and an MA in 1950. Ms. Gladys received scholarships from Texas Women s University in biology, from the University of Texas in world history and from Abilene Christian in social studies. While working under a doctoral program, she attended WTS, SWSTC, Sul Ross and the University of Houston. Gladys was very active in the Girl Scouts and 4-H organizations. She was a Girl Scout Troop leader in Carmine and Giddings for many years and in 1942 she was honored as Girl Scout Alumni Youngest Leader in the United States of America. She was also a member of the Central Lone Star Council of Leaders in Austin. Round Top-Carmine 4-Hers won local, district and national contests while under her supervision. She served as vice president and president of the Leaders Club and was an alumni honoree. Ms. Gladys was chairwoman of the Round Top Dance Club for 10 years and the Fourth of July Parade for 30 years, which began with only four floats. She served on the registration committee for veterans celebration at Fayette Courthouse, including selling tickets for the Fayette Veterans Book and organizing the book for publication. She was a member of the Round Top-Warrenton Fire Department Auxiliary, chairman of the raffle committee and the 100 Club chairman for many years. She also helped prepare meals for the Round Top Farm Bureau. Gladys belonged to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Round Top, Round Top Library Association, Round Top Historical Association, Round Top-Warrenton Fire Department Auxiliary and the Wildlife Association. Church affiliations include activities in both Round Top and Carmine. Ms. Gladys was responder for Lutheran Social Service for many years, took elderly to doctors, hospitals and shopping, secretary of stewardship of Mary Martha Circle for one year, Round Top Brotherhood Sunday chicken fry chairwoman for 25 years, active member of Round Top Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 42 years and 35 years a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church of Carmine. Ms. Gladys taught Sunday school and Bible class for 20 years in Carmine and was a member of Carmine Ladies Aid. Various activities at Bethlehem Lutheran Church included her membership in the Ruth Circle, served on the altar supply committee for 25 years, chairwoman of the Altar Guild for 17 years, designed the stained glass windows, a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery committee and managed to get the markers restored and cleaned in 1990, supervised grounds and cemetery cleaning for many years, was a funeral usher from 1986 to 2001, tour guide from 1986 to 1998, a member of the restoration committee, served on the evangelism committee for many years, usher supervisor for several years, took care of the shrubs and planted shrubs and roses, served on the church council from 1992 to 1995 and had altar, pulpit and lectern restored. Ms. Gladys taught school for 40 years. She taught at the following school districts: Gay Hill grade 1 to 5 in 1945-1946; Giddings grade 3 in 1946; SHSTC geography, government history, veterans in 1947; Round Top Carmine grade 4 in 1948-1959; and Brenham science and librarian of junior high and middle school in 1959-1985. Career achievements include life member of TSTA, active member of TSTA and Classroom Teacher, former district 13 social studies chairman, member of State Social Studies Committee, vice president of Washington County TSTA for two years, faculty and legislative representative for TSTA and Brenham Classroom teachers, president and vice president of the Washington County International Reading Association, served on the school insurance committee for many years, faculty representative to the school board for many years while at Brenham Junior High and Middle Schools, chairperson and secretary for the science department and served on the library and building committee. Ms. Gladys was very active with retired teachers organizations. She was chairman of membership and parliamentarian for many years and president of Fayette Retired Teachers for two years and received Membership, Grand Prix, Appreciation and Volunteer awards. Other activities included president of Fayette Bastrop Rural Carriers Auxiliary for two terms, member of the Texas German Heritage Society and took care of relatives and friends. In 1986 Ms. Gladys was awarded the Senior Citizen Award. During Ms. Gladys lifetime, she made numerous donations to various local organizations including Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lutherhill, Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Rifle Association Hall, Round Top State Bank and many others. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Lee A. Krause, Jr. on Oct. 16, 1992; her parents, Alfred and Ida Jaster; brothers, Willis Jaster and James Jaster; Lee s parents, Lee H. Krause, Sr. and Helene Krause; the Krause family: Gus Krause, Dora Krause, Lee Leonhardt, Johnny and Cecil Krause, Lynn Leonhardt Littlejohn, David Vierus and Cynthia Leonhardt. Survivors include her sister, Junice Jaster Walther; brother-in-law, Frank Walther; sister-in-law, Ruth Jaster; brother-in-law, Elmer Krause and his wife Patricia; brother-in-law, Clarence Krause and his wife Monica; and sister-in-law, Helen Krause Leonhardt. Mrs. Gladys Krause has numerous nieces and nephews surviving. They include: Dorothy Jaster Steele, Wayne Jaster, Sherry Jaster Smith, Betty Walther Pior, Larry Walther, David Walther, Pearlie Krause Wagner, Ruby Leonhardt Vierus, Doris Leonhardt Eckermann, Jeff Krause, Cathy Krause Bates, Carol Krause Coward, Vickie Krause Johnson, Darrell Krause, Monique Krause and Michael Krause. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 16 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Round Top with Pastor John David Nedbalek officiating. Burial will be in Hill Cemetery in Round Top. A prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 15 at Foehner Funeral Home in Burton. Mrs. Krause will lie in state at Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, in Brenham, from noon today until 9 a.m. Tuesday and at Foehner Funeral Home in Burton from 10 a.m. Tuesday until noon Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Larry Walther, David Walther, Jeff Krause, Wayne Wagner, Eugene Hall, Matthew D. Krause, Mike Peters and Monty Mayer. Memorials may be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Old Organ Fund, the American Cancer Society Fayette County Chapter or M.D. Anderson Hospital. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Foehner Funeral in Burton and Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, in Brenham.
