Gladys Mertz Schilling, 78, wife of Delphine G. Schilling, died August 5, 2010 in Kruse Memorial Village. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham. Pastors Lawrence Bade and Phillip Fenton will officiate. Burial will follow in the Greenvine Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Saturday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Mrs. Schilling was born August 23, 1931, in Welcome, Texas to Edwin and Hilda Bender Mertz. She was baptized and later confirmed in Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome, and attended school in the Welcome area. On December 21, 1950, she married Delphine G. Schilling in Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome. For 30 years, she was manager of the cafeteria at Brenham Junior High School. A member of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church, she loved to go fishing and camping. An avid gardener, she also cherished time spent with her three great-grandsons. She especially enjoyed family gatherings. Survivors include her husband, Delphine G. Schilling; sons and daughters-in-law Larry Dean and Terri Schilling of Austin, Glen Dell and Sharon Schilling of Richmond, and daughter and son-in-law Janice and Eugene Gaskamp of Bellville; grandchildren: Amy Gaskamp and fiancé Jason Pieper; Marcus and Miranda Gaskamp, and Laura Beth Schilling; great-grandchildren: Rick, Michael and Eric Cano; sisters Myrtle Winkelmann and Elda Gajeske and husband Bennie; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Melvin and Dorothy Schilling of La Grange, LeRoy and Pauline Schilling of Austin, sister-in-law Vernell Mertz of Burton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers-in-law Reinhardt Winkelmann and Willie Mertz, and sister-in-law, Neville Schilling. Serving as pallbearers are Donald Winkelmann, Ronnie Gajeske, Dale Mertz, Weldon Krause, Calvin Krause, Weldon Hartman, Bruce Freudenberg, and Johnny Dobecka. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church or to Bellville General Hospital, or a favorite charity.
