Glyn Roy Spies, Age 76, passed away July 18, 2023. Visitation with the family will be Friday, July 21, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Funeral services celebrating Glyn’s life will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Rehburg at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22. Burial will follow at the Church cemetery.

 

Glyn was born June 19, 1947 to Glenver Herbert Spies and Joyce Allen Bernhardt in Winedale, Texas.

 

Glyn was baptized in September of 1947 in St John’s Lutheran Church in Warrenton, Texas and confirmed in 1960 at St James Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Waltrip High School in Houston Texas in 1965. While in High School, he was involved with the ROTC program. 

 

From December 1967 to January 1969, he served as a helicopter crew chief and rear door gunner in the Vietnam War.  He received basic training from Fort Polk and continued his training at Fort Rucker Army Base in Alabama. He was proud of his service as was his family. Glyn was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 7104, served as a past Commander and held various offices there.  He continued his involvement in Bingo and steak suppers throughout his life. He cherished his fellow comrades at the VFW. 

 

In 1977, he moved to Burton, Texas and joined the booming oil field. As a trade, he was a mechanic and worked numerous years at Courtesy Chevrolet in Houston and Lawrence Marshall Chevrolet in Hempstead as a Shop Foreman.

 

He spent his retirement beside his son working in the agricultural business. He was an avid supporter of his children and grandchildren in their various athletic and livestock events. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping out at the lake and skiing with friends.

 

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Sandra and Ross Tillman, Glynn Adam Spies and special friend Julie Richter, Kathy and Blake Shedd and special friend Ellyn Smit; grandchildren Trey Tillman and fiancé Kelly Shows, Rhealee Spies, Pierson Spies, Randa Tillman, Jagger Roy Shedd; sisters and brothers-in-law Linda and Lenny Kirts, Cynthia and Gene Richardson, nephews Brian and Shayne Kirts, Patrick and Allie Kirts.

 

Glyn is preceded in death by his grandparents Benno and Alma Spies, Albert and Leona Bernhardt, parents Glenver and Joyce Spies, Uncle Reuben and Aunt Shirley Beisert and numerous other family members.

 

Pallbearers include Bryan Kirts, Nick Goldberg, Craig Gouldson, Robert Baker, Scott Stewart and Cody Schulz. Honorary Pallbearers are Glyn’s grandchildren, VFW Post 7104 and the Ladies Auxiliary.

 

Memorials may be directed to VFW Post 7104 or St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Rehburg.
