Gus Wehring

Gus A. Wehring, age 78, a resident of the Burton community, died at the College Station Medical Center in College Station, Texas, on Friday, October 6, 2006. Mr. Wehring was born October 26, 1927. His early life was spent in Burton where he completed Burton High School in 1945. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John s United Church of Christ in Burton. He served with the 5th Air Force in Japan during 1946 and 1947. After completing Blinn College in 1948, he attended the University of Texas in Austin where he received his BBA degree in Accounting in 1950. He was a Certified Public Accountant. He spent 7 years in Public Accounting with the International Public Accounting Firm of Haskins & Sells. In 1957, he joined Cornell Oil Company, an independent oil and gas production company in Dallas, serving as the Chief Financial Officer of Cornell with responsibilities for all accounting, tax and financial matters. He also served as an office of several subsidiary and affiliated companies of Cornell and a private foundation. Gus retired from Cornell in October, 1992. In June, 1952, he married Dorothy C. Kunrad of Brenham, who preceded him in death in December, 1980. In August, 1984, he was married to Janice L. Barnes of Dallas. He is survived by his wife, Janice Wehring; a sister-in-law, Helen Ann Wehring of Austin, a nephew, Stephen W. Wehring and wife Vicky, and children Tye and Heidi of Dripping Springs, and stepsons Andy Barnes and wife Janet of Phoenix, Arizona, and David Barnes and wife Beverly, and grandchildren Brittany, Jack, and Austin, of Phoenix, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Annie Wehing; his brother Otto William Wehring, and his sister, Alvina S. Wehring. In October, 1998, Gus and Janice moved to the Wehring homestead near Burton, where they enjoyed a quiet and peaceful retirement. Gus and Jan were active in their church, St. John s United Church of Christ in Burton. He was also active in and a major supporter of the Burton Cotton Gin and Museum, as well as in the Burton Lions Club. Gus had the good fortune to travel and enjoy a substantial part of this beautiful world. Music was also important to him, and through their participation in large church choirs in Dallas, Gus and Jan were able to tour numerous European countries and had the pleasure of singing in several cathedrals and churches in Europe. In this church choir connection, a trip to Israel in 1994, provided them with the experience of singing in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Nazareth at Christmas time. Memorial services will be held Sunday, October 8, 2006 at 4:30 p.m. at St. John s United Church of Christ in Burton with Pastor Glen Schoeneberg officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Burton. Foehner Funeral Home of Burton will be in charge of arrangements.
