Gwendolyn Dorothy Raymond, affectionately known to her children as “Mutti” passed away peacefully July 8, 2024, in Tomball, TX with family at her side. She was 96.
All who knew Gwen will recall her strong, resilient and independent spirit. She touched many over the span of her life with her humor, friendship, caring and kindness.
Gwen is survived by five of her six children: Dorothy Habermann and son-in-law Barry of Cañon City, CO, Kenneth Raymond of Rockport, TX, Theresa Gellerman and son-in-law Dan of Hockley, TX, Christina Raymond of Quincy, FL, and Alice Young and son-in-law Gary of Knoxville TN. She is also survived by her granddaughter Lily Wan of New York City, NY, and grandson Kevin Wan of Denver, CO, in addition to a special niece, Jennifer Brooks Alley of Stumpy Point, NC.
Gwen is preceded in death by her husband and ‘love of her life’ Kenneth W Raymond (1992), her youngest son David Raymond, whom she was wholeheartedly devoted to (2017), her sister Cecilia Gambier Brooks (2023), and her parents Nora and Edward Gambier.
Gwen was born in Aukland, New Zealand July 17, 1927. At six months of age, her family returned to their home in England. As a teenager, Gwen experienced the Blitzkrieg bombings of London during World War II. As a young adult, she studied to be an administrative assistant, where she excelled at her shorthand and ‘lightning speed’ typing skills. Following, she secured a position with Pan American Airlines in London, where she met her husband-to-be, Ken, a pilot and flight instructor. They were married May 3, 1952, and began their family. In 1960, Gwen and her family moved to Berlin, where they resided for five years, before being transferred to Miami, Florida. In 1978, following Ken’s retirement, they moved to Venice, FL.
In 2004, Gwen moved to Bellville, then Brenham TX, to be closer to her son David, who was residing at the Brenham State Supported Living Center, and her daughter Theresa. Following her son’s passing in 2017, Gwen moved to Kruse Village in Brenham. In 2020 Gwen moved yet again to Village Green Memory Care and Assisted Living in Tomball, TX, just minutes away from her daughter.
Gwen would often comment with conviction, “I’ve had a full and wonderful life, a great husband and children. What more could I ask for?” Gwen’s memories of her childhood, her worldwide travels, and her family, were always told with explicit and engaging detail. She made friends easily wherever she landed and was always ready to offer a helping hand.
The family extends their sincere thanks and gratitude to the caring and compassionate team at Village Green Tomball over the last four years, and more recently, to the wonderful team from Remarkable Hospice.
A longtime supporter of the Brenham State Supported Living Center, and volunteer with the Volunteer Services Council at BSSLC, it was Gwen’s wish that in her honor, memorial contributions be made to enhance the lives of the residents at BSSLC:
