On October 2, 2019, God’s hand touched the Mertz household and called His Angel, Hannah Claire Mertz, to greet her Savior, Jesus. Hannah Claire was born on January 14, 2003 in Brenham, Texas to Scot David Mertz and Jennifer Leah Schubert Mertz of Brenham. Hannah Claire’s Faith, evident every day of her life, is especially expressed through her membership in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and her spiritual connection to Camp Allen. She started her education at St. Paul’s Christian Day School. As Eleventh Grade student at Brenham High School and a member of the Brenham High School Varsity Cheerleaders, she spread her joy and love to everyone she met. Hannah Claire’s life activities, rooted in faith, family, friends, fairness and competition, include Brenham School of Dance, Soccer, Washington County Softball All Stars, Volleyball, FFA, Zionsville 4-H, Washington County Fair Goat Exhibitor, bringing home numerous awards and buckles, 2013 Junior Maifest Queen, Cheer Factory All Star Team, Heritage Society Belle, Camp Allen, Junior High, Freshman, J. V. and Varsity Cheerleader, St. Paul’s Youth Group and PALS Mentor. Further activities include being an avid hunter and outdoorswoman. Hannah Claire and her mom share a love for the beach, especially the Bahamas, where she could scuba dive and experience every water sport imaginable. Her dad’s prime filet and chicken fried steak ran a close race for her favorite meal. Hannah Claire continues to be loved and cherished by her parents, her brothers, Caleb Mertz and Zachary Mertz; Caleb’s girlfriend, Hannah Bess Hernandez; Grandparents, Bobby and Mary Mertz, Gloria Stoddard and Charles and Pam Schubert; Great Grandmother, Ona Lange; Aunts and Uncles, Ron And Rebecca Mertz, Dana Edge, Brad and Mandy Schubert, Kevin and Heather Schubert and Jason and Heidi Stoddard; Cousins, Mason, Collin and Tyson Mertz, Hailee and Cody Lancon and daughter, Linlee, Mila and Grey Schubert, Holden and Harper Schubert, Joshua and Jacob Stoddard and Kate and Connor Edge; Great Aunts and Uncles, Bob and Patsy Schubert and family, Mark and Dottie Schubert and family, Kathy Randermann and family, Kimberly and Michael Williams and family and Kay Nell and Herbert Glaesmann and family. Hannah Claire is greeted with open arms in heaven by her Grandfather, Alfred “Leroy” Stoddard; her Uncle, Justin Mertz; her Great Grandparents, Erwin and Amanda Glaesmann, Willie and Lorine Mertz, Charles and Angela Schubert, Maurice and Ruby DeOlive, and cousin Charles Trip Schubert. Pallbearers will be Mason Mertz, Collin Mertz, Tyson Mertz, Connor Edge, Jackson Williams, and Harris Williams. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mila and Grey Schubert, Holden and Harper Schubert, Brenham High School Varsity Cheerleaders, and the Senior Class of 2021.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 6, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 7, 2019 at 2:00 pm at St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Pat Dietrich officiating. Committal will follow the celebration at Prairie Lea Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Hannah Claire Mertz Memorial Fund at Citizens State Bank. The funds will be distributed in memory of Hannah Claire through scholarships and related youth activities for St Paul’s Christian Day School and Brenham High School.
