Hazel Dell Boone Wilkening, 93, went to meet our Lord on Friday, September 18, 2009, with her family at her side, encircling her with their love and prayers. Hazel was born September 26, 1915 in Burton, Texas. She was the daughter of Ira Boone and Lula Knittel Boone. She attended the Burton schools through the eighth grade the highest offered at that time, then commuted every day to Brenham, where she graduated. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College, now known as Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She received her bachelor½s degree from the University of Houston. Hazel and Murry E. Wilkening were married, eloping on July 7, 1936 to Fredericksburg, Texas. They had three children, F. Boone Wilkening, Virginia Wilkening McCune, and Ronald E. Wilkening. She taught school at Rehburg, the same school where her grandmother, Maude Knittel taught. She also taught at the Burton Elementary School, and retired from teaching in the LaPorte School District, where she taught for twenty years. She touched many lives. She was a loving, outgoing Christian person. She was a member of the 88 Club and a Sorority Sister of the Teachers Association of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She and Murry belonged to a Dance Club, had many friends and danced many a step. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Woodrow Boone and loving husband, Murry Wilkening. She is survived by her son, F. Boone Wilkening and wife Barbara; his family, Mike Wilkening and wife Ann Marie, Becky Wilkening Paddock and husband Bill, and Laura Wilkening Eubanks and husband Kim; her daughter, Virginia Wilkening McCune and husband Jim McCune, Jr.; her family, Jamie McCune Logan and husband John, and James McCune III and wife Melissa; her son, Ronald E. Wilkening and wife Sharon; his family, Julie Wilkening Gray and husband Richard, Ginger Wilkening Paul and husband Bobby, and Jason Wilkening and wife Somaly. Hazel also included Gary Meschi as one of her own. Her great-grandchildren are Mary Ann Wilkening, Laura Crowley and husband Charlie Crowley, Cameron Eubanks, Weston Eubanks, Taylor Eubanks, Danielle Lemmon, James McCune IV, Kaitlin Gajeski, Ashlyn Gajeski, Garrett Gray, Laurel Gray, Grant Gray, Jenna Dell Paul, Emery Paul, Jaxon Wilkening, and Jaylee Wilkening. Her great-great-grand children are Caleb Crowley, Ava Crowley, Becky Bohanan, and Robert Simmons. Serving as pallbearers are nephews Harry Lee Stark, Mark Wilkening and Travis Pilchiek, and grandsons Mike Wilkening, Jim McCune III and Jason Wilkening. Honorary pallbearers are great-grandsons Weston Eubanks and Cameron Eubanks and special friend Tim Gerik. Funeral services for Hazel Dell Boone Wilkening will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday September 26, 2009 at St. Johns United Church of Christ in Burton with Glen Schoeneberg, officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 25 at the Foehner Funeral Home in Burton. Memorials may be made to the Gamma Omega Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Intl., 704 N. Fowlkes St., Sealy, TX 77474. Delta Kappa Gamma is a teachers½ sorority of which Hazel had been a member since 1966. The Society provides scholarships to students desiring to become teachers, as well as assisting in furthering the education of existing teachers.
