Herbert Scott Hughes Senior Obituary
July 11, 1942 – December 11, 2023

Herbert Scott Hughes, Sr., age 81, entered into everlasting life on December 11, 2023 in Katy, Texas.

Herbert was born the second son of the late Henry Waters and Maude Bess (McMeans) Hughes on July 11, 1942 in Brenham, Texas. As a young man, he participated in many activities such as the Washington County Fair, Salt Grass Trail Ride, 4H, Maifest, Boy Scouts, and the Brenham High School Band. The day following his high school graduation in 1960, he boarded a flight to attend Mexico City College where his love of multicultural pursuits began.

He returned to Brenham and enrolled at Blinn College, graduating with an Associate’s degree. Transferring to the University of Texas in Austin, he soon met the love of his life, Patricia Scheberle, where both were active in the International Club. He also enjoyed participating in the Longhorn Singers and Glee Club.

He graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree from UT in 1966. Later that year, Herbert was awarded a Rotary International Fellowship to attend the Universidad MacKenzie in Sao Paolo, Brazil for two years, completing post graduate hours in Brazilian studies.

Herbert and Patricia were united in holy matrimony at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, Texas by Curate Jack Lowrey on June 7, 1969. They later made their home in McAllen, Texas and raised three sons: Scott, Kelley, and O’Brien.

In 1974 he became a Licensed Professional Counselor and earned his Master’s of Education in Guidance and Counseling with a Vocational endorsement from Texas A&M University.  He received a state award for Special Services from The Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) and served as President of the organization in 1977.  He worked in the Rio Grande Valley in the McAllen school system as a vocational counselor, where in 1981 he was named “Educator of the Year in Special Services.”

In 1982 Herbert and Patricia returned to Herbert’s hometown to become owners and administrators of Brenham Rest Home. They took pride in creating a home-like environment with care and compassion for their residents and staff until they retired in 1994.

Herbert was a member of Rotary Club International of Brenham for over four decades and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a long-time member of the Elks Club. He loved singing and playing the piano. He enjoyed traveling and helping others discover their educational and career pursuits. He was very proud of his family. A natural storyteller, he especially enjoyed discussing local history and was particularly proud of his multigenerational Washington County heritage, which can be traced back to the Republic of Texas. His warmth and friendship were felt by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm Friday, December 15 at Memorial Oaks Chapel with the family present from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 16 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Brenham with Father Stephen Whaley officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be O’Brien Hughes, Liam Hughes, Pierce Hughes, Wade Hughes, Edd Compton, and Randy Kapchinski. Honorary pallbearers are Grant Hughes, Lillian Hughes, Tyson Voelkel, Beau Voelkel, and Paul Slaton.

Scott Hughes, Jr. of Brenham, Kelley Hughes and wife Dana Hughes of Katy, and O’Brien Hughes and his wife Lori Hughes, of The Woodlands; grandchildren: Grant Hughes, Lillian Hughes, Pierce Hughes, and Liam Hughes, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as other family and friends.
