Herbert William Nienstedt, 86, of Brenham, died Nov. 26, 2014, in Brenham. The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Salem Lutheran Church of Salem with Pastor Toby Burk officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Visitation will be from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Mr. Nienstedt was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Burton, TX, to Herbert D.F. and Elsie Kasten Nienstedt. He served in the Army during the Korean War in the 82nd Airborne Division and in the 82nd Signal Corps from Jan. 12, 1951 to Jan. 15, 1953. On Oct. 16, 1959, he was married to Helen Louise Ahrens at Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church of Berlin. He was a member of the Burton Fire Dept. and served 31 years with the Columbus Fire Dept. where he was captain for 19 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 383 and was on the board of directors for many years. Mr. Nienstedt was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. from May 3, 1948 to Aug. 19, 1989 with 41 years and 3 months of perfect attendance. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Salem. Survivors include his wife, Helen Nienstedt of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Chuck Peterson of Cypress; grandchildren, Haylie Marie Peterson of Los Angeles, CA and Ryan Charles Peterson of Cypress; sister-in-law, Lydia Heins; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Lanell Nienstedt and M.W. "Cowboy" Neinast; and brother, Charles Calvin Nienstedt. Mr. Nienstedt''s grandson and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church of Salem or Hospice Brazos Valley.
