Herbert Herman Thiel, Jr., 97, passed away on April 10, 2025. Herbert was born on November 29, 1927 in Brenham, Texas to Herbert and Ida Thiel.
Herbert participated in football at Brenham High School as a star running back where he weighed in at 89 pounds and managed an almost undefeated season with a one game loss. He graduated from Brenham High School in the class of 1946 and was drafted into the army on September 24, 1946. During his time in the army, he worked as an instrument repairman on Umnak Island, Alaska. He was then honorably discharged from the army on February 6, 1948 and received a World War II victory medal for his service.
He found love and married his wife Helen Smith on September 9, 1960. They lived a beautiful life together in Brenham, Texas. He was a man of many talents and owned a service station, worked for the City of Brenham and Southwestern Bell. His hobbies consisted of hunting, fishing, and running cattle on his beautiful homestead.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who was preceded in death by his brothers, L.J. Thiel (Missy), Leon Thiel (Nancy), Hugh Thiel (Bernice)and sister, Lillie Mae Holtgrave (Chuck) and Sherri Thiel(daughter). He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen Thiel, their children, Todd Thiel, Terri Cole (Patrick) and Debbie Henneke, grandchildren, Robert Cole (Stephanie), Kevin Cole, Tanna and Taiden Thiel and great-grandchildren, Kadin and Madelyn Cole.
A visitation for Herbert will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Chapel located at 1306 W. Main Street, Brenham, Texas. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm with the burial to follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Todd Thiel, Robert Cole, Kevin Cole, Lloyd Kortis, Bobby Spain and Mark Thiel. Honorary pallbearers include; Arno Jahnke, Kenneth Lange, Charles Meinecke, Pat Cole, Randy Holtgrave and Dr. Mario Lammoglia.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Hospice Brazos Valley for caring for Herbert in his last days. Also, in lieu of flowers Hospice Brazos Valley would greatly accept donations. The family would also like to thank Dr. Mario Lammoglia(cardiologist) for his years of superior care.
