Hilda Louise Wernecke Schroeder Horstmann passed away August 18, 2022, at Eden Hill Communities in New Braunfels, TX, at the age of 96. Hilda was born on July 8, 1926, to Robert and Minnie (Kruse) Wernecke in the Rocky Hill-Prairie Hill community of Washington County, Texas.
She was baptized August 8, 1926, at St. John Lutheran Church, Prairie Hill, by Rev. Paul Goglin. She confirmed her faith May 5, 1940, by the same Pastor. On October 6, 1946, she married Marvin Schroeder at St. John and they raised two children, Tyrus and Alan. Marvin preceded her in death on October 22, 1985.
On September 22, 1990, she married Wilbert Horstmann with Rev. Harold Wernecke and Rev. Charles Eckert officiating. Wilbert passed away on March 19, 2013.
Hilda enjoyed cooking, dancing, fishing, gardening, playing cards and dominos, and being a friend to all. She was a loving wife and mother and was very supportive of everyone she met. She previously served on the visitation and tape ministry committee, the altar guild, and Family Aid at church, the VFW, Disabled Veterans, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and Prairie Hill Fire Department Auxiliary.
She is survived by sons Dr. Tyrus (Sharon) Schroeder of New Braunfels and Alan (Leslie) Schroeder of Pearland, brother Dr. Robert (Sue) Wernecke of Frisco, grandchildren Michael Schroeder of New Braunfels, Daniel Schroeder of Houston, Kirsten (Josh) Muehlbrad of Castle Rock, CO, Zachery Schroeder of Katy, step-sons Gary (Nancy) Horstmann of Rosenberg, Glenn (Valentina) Horstmann of Franklin, NC, and step-daughter Susan Myers (special friend Bob) of Brenham, along with numerous step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, husbands, brother Rev. Harold Wernecke and his wife, Gretchen, of Round Rock, sister Ruby Schlottmann and her husband, Lonnie, of Brenham.
There will be a visitation on Monday, August 22, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main in Brenham. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 23, at 11 am at St. John Lutheran Church, Prairie Hill with burial at St. John's cemetery immediately following the service.
Memorials may be given to St John Prairie Hill, the American Cancer Society, or American Heart Association.
