Howard Allen Mead, 75, husband of Lana Mead, died January 21, 2020 in Brenham.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 31, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Joven Saavedra officiating. Burial will be on February 3, 2020 in Houston National Cemetery.
Mr. Mead was born in Houston, TX on January 27, 1944 to Howard and Martha (Roznowski) Mead. He married the love of his life, Lana Anders, on May 31, 1969. He was baptized in 1944 and confirmed in 1960, both at a catholic church in Houston.
Howard bravely served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He achieved a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1970 with honors at Sam Houston State University. He was a Benefits Finance Manager at Tenneco Inc.
Howard was involved in the Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, in several leadership roles: Webelos Den Leader of Pack 647 from 1980-1981, Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 631 from 1982-1983, Scoutmaster of Troop 631 in 1984, Scoutmaster of Troop 1177 from 1984-1989, Committee Chair of Troop 1177 in 1990, and Scoutmaster of Troop 277 in 2000. He completed Wood Badge training, SC-231-42, in 1983. He was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow; his Vigil Honor name was “Steadfast Guide On Scouting Trail.” He also received the Silver Beaver Award in 1993.
Howard was a life member of the Jersey Village Volunteer Fire Department, serving as a Firefighter-EMS and photographer. He led American Legion Jersey Village Post 324 as Commander in 2009 and then was American Legion 8th District Commander from 2009-2010. He would later volunteer with the Brenham Police Department's Citizens on Patrol. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Lana Mead of Brenham, TX; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Allen Mead and his wife Jennifer Pierce Stayton of Austin, TX and Virgil Alan Mead and his wife Stephanie Rigoulot Mead of Tomball, TX; brother and sister-in-law, Robert Mead and his wife Jasmine Mead of Pocatello, ID; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen Sanders and her husband Don Sanders of Scottsdale, AZ and Jeanette Ford and her husband Stan Ford of Brenham, TX; grandchildren, Samantha Ann Mead, Zachary Alan Mead, and Jackson Alan Mead.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Samantha Ann Mead, Zachary Alan Mead, and Jackson Alan Mead.
Memorials may be directed to Capitol Area Council Boy Scouts of America, or Sam Houston Area Council Boy Scouts of America, or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brenham, TX.
Funeral arrangements for Howard Allen Mead are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham.
