Hugh Cobb, Jr.

Hugh J. Cobb, Jr., known to many as “HJ”, passed away on June 23, 2022. He was 88 years old. Visitation with the family will start at 10:00 am, on Saturday, July 2, at Pine Island Baptist Church. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am. Graveside services will be that afternoon at 3:00 pm at Hopewell Cemetery in Normangee, Texas.

HJ was born December 29, 1933 in Normangee, Texas to parents Hugh Sr. and Rubye (Taft) Cobb. He grew up in the area and graduated Normangee high school in 1951. HJ was employed by Grocer’s Supply Co. for 28 years. He eventually was promoted to supervisor of frozen foods.

HJ was united in marriage to Mae Etta Roberts on November 22, 1952. They were blessed with three daughters and a son. HJ was very involved as a father, and he taught his kids the value of hard work by showing them how to do handy work and repairs. HJ was very involved as a member of Northwest Crossing Baptist Church for over 50 years. He served as a deacon and also a treasurer, maintenance man, and whatever else was needed. HJ was also a member of the Masons for 62 years, as a member of the Reagan Lodge #1037 in the Houston Heights. He was a past Master, Golden Trowel Award Recipient, and long-time treasurer. He was a lifelong member.  HJ was a very talented mechanic and could fix anything. He loved being outside in God’s creation to enjoy fishing, growing a garden, picking wild blackberries, or tending to his bees.

HJ is preceded in death by his wife Mae Etta in 2019; his parents; sister Montez McFarland; granddaughter Samantha Egger.

Surviving loving family includes children and their spouses: Hugh J. Cobb III, Karen Godfrey (husband James) Debra Dronet (husband Gary), Toye Bird (husband Ricky); grandchildren Randall Godfrey (wife Amy), Allen Godfrey (wife Amanda), Jennifer Baker (Babe), Stephanie Dronet, Gary Egger, Crissy Bird, Chyann Bird; great-grandchildren, Branden Godfrey, Kaitlyn Godfrey, Ashlyn Godfrey, Chloe Godfrey, Laney Godfrey, Cailey Baker, Axel Baker, Levi Godfrey, Colt Baker, Elijah Bird.

Pallbearers will be Randall Godfrey, Allen Godfrey, Babe Baker, Gary Egger, Branden Godfrey, and Ricky Bird. Honorary Pallbearers are James Godfrey, Gary Dronet, and Kenneth Egger.
