Jack Arlitt

Jack Walter Arlitt passed away in College Station, Texas, on September 6, 2017, at the age of 97. He was born in Austin, Texas, on November 5, 1919, to Carl Walter Arlitt and Elizabeth Ehlers Arlitt.

After growing up in Austin, Jack attended the University of Texas and earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. Immediately thereafter, Jack served in the South Pacific as an aircraft maintenance officer with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, Jack worked for General Electric in several locations across the country.

While visiting Houston, Jack met Oleis Marion Heineke. They married in 1947, and became the parents of two daughters, Cynthia Ann (Cindy) and Cheryl Jean (Cherry).

In Houston, Jack began a long career with Houston Lighting & Power Company. He started in industrial power sales, was promoted to manager and eventually became general manager of fuels acquisition before retiring in 1983. He was a registered professional engineer and was active in the Engineers Club of Houston and the Kiwanis Club.

During retirement, Jack and Oleis moved to Oleis’ hometown of Brenham, Texas. Jack was active in philanthropy, with emphasis on St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and Lutheran Social Services.

Jack was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Oleis Heineke Arlitt, in 2005. He was also predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Arlitt Sivley.

Jack is survived by his daughters, Cindy Buford (and husband John) and Cherry Craven. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kelly Sapstead (and husband Brent) and Kevin Buford (and wife Misty); by his great-grandchildren, Noah Buford, Bailey Buford and Ellis Sapstead; and by his niece Sue Reed and nephew Steve Sivley.

The family would like to express special thanks to the caregivers from AMA Home Care, especially Melanie Walker.

The funeral service will be on Sunday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham, Texas, with arrangements by Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., Brenham. More information is available at www.memorialoakschapel.com.
