James enjoyed a full life and always had a kind word or smile for everyone. He was born July 20, 1933 in the Sandy Hill Community of Washington County, Texas to Willie Sr. and Ella Buerger Becker. He was baptized on August 20, 1933 at Sandy Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church by Rev. Czerkus, and was later confirmed in the same church on June 6, 1949. He was educated in the public schools of Washington County, and graduated from Brenham High School in 1950. While in high school, James played on the first Brenham High School baseball team. After graduation, he went to work in Houston, Texas for a short time, returning to Brenham to work for the Texas Highway Department. While employed at THD he was called to active duty in the Army serving for two years and being honorably discharged on May 31, 1962. He retired from Texas Highway Department after 35 years of service. After retiring from the Highway Department, he worked part time for John Pledger Engineers, and later with Medi-Care Equipment Company.
On December 7, 1958, James was joined in marriage with Betty Jean Boeker at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Brenham, Texas by Rev. Theo. Streng, and they recently celebrated 58 years of marriage. He was a long time member of Salem Lutheran Church of Salem where he served on church council, and as an usher and greeter. James and Betty lived on the family farm and he enjoyed working on the tractor and raising cattle. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying the Dallas Cowboys, Texas A&M Aggies, and Texas Longhorns, as well as following his grandchildren to their sport of choice, whether it be football, golf, softball, or bowling. He enjoyed them all and was there as often as possible cheering on the grandchildren. While his children were growing up he was instrumental in helping start the Brenham Booster Club.
