Just after having letters from friends read to him by his wife and granddaughter, James H. Sutterby, 74, of Brenham peacefully passed into eternity during the early afternoon of Tuesday July 19, 2005. He was at home, surrounded by his family. Born on June 26, 1931 in Buffalo, New York, Jim was the son of Frank & Lillian Delamater Sutterby. He was baptized in infancy in the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Peekskill, New York, where he was later confirmed, and where, most importantly, he and Phyllis Bellusci were married on April 12, 1958. Jim graduated from high school in Peekskill New York and joined the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, Mr. Sutterby attended Paul Smith s College. As a hotel and club manager, his career extended from the fine hotels in New York City and Pennsylvania to the Naples Yacht Club in Naples, Florida. Following his retirement, Jim was a volunteer for many religious and charitable organizations. As members of Open Doors U.S.A., Jim and Phyllis smuggled bibles into Cuba and China. Locally, Jim was a volunteer in CERTS, HOSTS, The Citizen s Police Academy Alumni, the Brenham Police Department and the Pastoral Care teams of Trinity Hospital and St. Peter s Episcopal Church. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Jim is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Brenham; his daughters and sons-in-law: Linda & Randy Patterson of Round Top, Texas and Lisa & Bob Boughton of Canton, Michigan. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Stephanie, Audra and Julia Patterson and Joel Hartom. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: George Sutterby and Frank Sutterby, Jr., and by his sister, Doris Sutterby Travis. The family will receive callers in Memorial Oaks Chapel on Wednesday evening between 6 o clock and 8 o clock. The funeral service will be held at 11 o clock on Thursday morning, July 21, 2005 in St. Peter s Episcopal Church of Brenham, with the Rev. Cecilia B. Smith officiating. Private burial rites will follow in the Drawe Cemetery at Round Top. Memorials may be given to St. Peter s Episcopal Church of Brenham, Hospice-Brenham or to Open Doors U.S.A. The family wishes to take this opportunity to publicly thank the St. Peter s Pastoral Care Team and Hospice-Brenham for their caring support. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Memorial Oaks Chapel; 1306 W. Main St., Brenham.
