Joe Medford Jernigan, 88, passed away October 25, 2011 in Brenham, TX. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 at Kruse Village Chapel, 1700 E. Stone St. in Brenham. A funeral service is also planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov 5, at Fair Haven Methodist Church, 1330 Gessner, Houston, TX 77055. His ashes will be interred with military honors, at 3:30pm that same day, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, located at 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079. A reception will follow at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home located at the entrance to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family plans a legacy gift in their father s name. Joe Jernigan was born August 20, 1923 in Beechgrove, Tennessee to James Mack and Ola Wiser Jernigan. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, he served in the Army Reserves between these wars and continued service in the reserves after Korea. Between the wars he obtained a Bachelor s Degree and was employed post-war by Mid-Continent Supply for almost 40 years. He was an active member of Fair Haven Methodist Church in Houston where he served for many years as an usher and food-pantry volunteer. He and wife Joanne lived for more than 40-years in the Spring Woods area of Houston, except for a few years spent in the Lake Worth area of Ft. Worth, TX. In 2008, he moved to Kruse Village in Brenham where he enjoyed wonderful community and staff support until his final day. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Mark and Shelley Jernigan of Friendswood, and Clark and Kathy Jernigan of Austin; daughter: Charlotte Jernigan of Burton, and daughter and son-in-law Dana and Malcolm McAvity of Greenwich, Conn.; brothers and sisters-in-law Willard and Betty Jernigan and Wayne and Virginia Jernigan; grandchildren: Doug McAvity, James McAvity, Angus McAvity, Katherine Jernigan, Claire Jernigan, Emily Jernigan, Matthew Jernigan, Katie Jernigan, and Josh Jernigan. His wife, Jimmie Joanne Jernigan, and his parents, James and Ola Jernigan, preceded him in death, as well as two brothers and one sister.
