John W. Hughes, 80, husband of Ruth N. Hughes, died Saturday, December 16, 2007 in Oakland Manor Nursing Home in Giddings. Mr. Hughes was born August 7, 1927 to John Vincent and Dorothea Mylette Hughes in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a graduate of New England College in New Hampshire. Mr. Hughes was a research analyst for the oil industry. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Houston. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Nestvogel Hughes; son James Hughes of Austin; a daughter, Pattie Johnson and husband Mark of Roswell, N.M.; sister Jane Walsh of Largo Fl.; 3 grandchildren: Billy Rogers and Casey Meadows, Christopher Rogers and Brhami Ituarte, and Jack and Amanda Taylor; great-grandchildren Sebastian Rogers, Madison Rogers, Nicholas Rogers, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, John A. Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a member of St. Anne s Catholic Church of Somerville; the Knights of Columbus since 1955, serving as Grand Knight and District Deputy of that organization. He was also a member of the Sons of Herman Lodge #6. He loved watching the Astros and was an avid Houston Oiler fan. He loved his family and his friends. Funeral services for John W. Hughes will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 19 at St. Anne s Catholic Church. 333 Thornberry Drive, in Somerville, with Father Joseph Geleney officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 18 at Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham. Visitation with family and friends will take place from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Serving as pallbearers are Billy Rogers, Christopher Rogers, Jack Taylor, Mark Johnson, James Hughes, and Patrick Walsh. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel.
