John Paul Pomeroy Jr. passed away peacefully on November 14, 2022.
Born into the Great Depression on June 4, 1930 in Nashville, Tennessee to Paul Pomeroy and Eva Yancy Pomeroy; he attended Castle Heights Military Academy, followed by the University of Tennessee; where he met the love of his life and lifelong “bride”; Francis Elizabeth (Booty) Christenbury.
The couple moved to Houston, Texas where he attended and graduated from the University of Houston School of Law in 1955. While in law school he founded what would become the first of many organizations and businesses; the University of Houston Moot Court Team. He practiced law in Houston for the next two decades, and served as an officer and committee chairman of the Houston Bar Association.
Paul Pomeroy, or “Muscles” as he was affectionately known within the family, was a wonderfully restless spirit, not content to watch life pass him by. Asked once if he liked to watch movies; his reply was simply, “life is far too exciting to spend it watching someone else”. This was indeed the roadmap of his life.
Never content to watch the World turn, he was a man with a purpose; always on the lookout for life’s next adventure. One such adventure, one which would make a lasting impression on both he and his bride, was moving the family to Mexico City after a break from practicing law. He had taken a major interest in a Mexican financial firm, in spite of the fact that he spoke no Spanish. He was a man who did not see obstacles; only possibilities. During two successful years living and working in Mexico City, he co-authored a book on investing in Mexico. After selling his stake in the business, he moved the family back to Houston; where he bought yet another business.
During his years owning Southwest Supply Inc., an oilfield supply company, he was a member of the steering committee of Energy Security Policy.
After retiring he and his bride moved to Brenham where they had long enjoyed a weekend farm. Retirement turned out to be just another rest stop on his roadmap of life. He served as Chairman and Director of the Washington County Council, and on April 5, 2000 he received the John Jacobs Humanitarian award; followed by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” award.
His proudest achievement and last adventure, was founding the Brenham’s Children’s Chorus, which in May will celebrate 20 years of providing musical education and enjoyment for the children of Brenham.
“Muscles” will always be remembered and missed as a loving and caring father. He is survived by the love of his life and lifelong bride, Frances (Booty) Pomeroy, son’s, Paul Pomeroy III (Zdena), Edward Todd Pomeroy (Lorrie), and daughter, Sarah Stephens Pomeroy; along with 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brenham’s Children’s Chorus.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main Street, Brenham, TX 77833. To post a tribute to the family, visit www.memorialoakschapel.com.
