John Spreen

December 16, 1925 — August 27, 2015

John W. Spreen, 89, husband of Mildred M. Jeske Spreen, passed away peacefully August 27, 2015 in Brenham, Texas surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015 at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. Pastor Sue Beall and Pastor Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at Memorial Oaks Chapel. John W. Spreen was born December 16, 1925 in Brenham to John F. and Ella Wernecke Spreen. He was baptized on January 11, 1926 and confirmed May 5, 1940 in St. John Lutheran Church. On December 1, 1946, he was married to his loving wife of almost sixty nine years, Mildred. They were the first couple to sit together in the church pew, when men and women traditionally sat on each side of the aisle. Prior to his death, they were the longest married couple of St. John Lutheran Church. John was employed his entire career by Sealy Mattress Company in Brenham, Texas. He started as a truck driver, worked in the factory building mattresses and furniture, and finished his career as a salesman. After forty years of service with Sealy Mattress, he continued farming and ranching until his death. Survivors include his wife, Mildred M. Spreen, daughter and son-in-law Kim and Bruce Weilbacher of San Antonio, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Ella Spreen, his brother, Herbert Spreen and his sister, Elsie Spreen Winkelmann. Serving as pallbearers are Kenneth Lange, Vernon Wagner, Marvin Haevischer, Marvin Spreen, Charles Giese, and Bruce Weilbacher. Honorary pallbearers are Walter Thielemann and Harold Rietz. Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements for John W. Spreen are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W.
