John Hilman Stanley

November 6, 1916 = June 22, 2019

Son of John Hilman and Georgia Pattison Stanley, John grew up in Port Arthur, Texas. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he attended Texas Christian University, earning degree in Political Science in 1938. He met Clemence Clark at TCU; they married November 10, 1939, lived in Houston where their four children, Jack, Gherlaine, Lee, and Dennis were born. In 1958 the family moved to New Jersey when John’s job with Texaco transferred him to New York City, where he was Manager of the Taxation Department at the Corporate Headquarters in the Chrysler Building. In 1973, Clemence insisted that they retire after he had served those 15 years (the period of time he had promised her she would have to stay away from Texas!) They returned to "The Farm" near Burton, which had been established in 1889 by his grandfather, John Hugh Stanley. Together John and Clemence created "The Stanley Ranch", raising white-faced Hereford cattle, Tennessee Walking Horses, and assorted types of "tumbling" pigeons. John served as Tax Assessor Collector for the Burton ISD for several years after he moved to the ranch, and has served as an Elder and Elder Emeritus at Bethany Church since 1973. He was a proud member of both the Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of the Republic of Texas. John had a lifelong love for horses, and Tennessee Walking Horses in particular. He rode over 3,000 miles on his beloved Brazos Bill, earning a gold belt buckle from North American Trail Riding Association. John rode for the last time on his 99th birthday, but retained his interest and love for horses until the end. John Stanley's passing represents the end of an era and his family, friends, and the Burton community will surely miss this wonderful man.

John was predeceased by his parents, John and Georgia Pattison Stanley, his sisters and brothers-in-law, Alpha Mell (George) Stuart, Naomi (Bob) Echlin, Patsy (Hubert) Davis, Jane (Bill) Terrell and granddaughter Amy Leigh Hofmann.
