Joseph Jacob Sykora, 78, of Burton, died Jan. 19, 2004, in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Mr. Sykora was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Stamford, TX, to John E. and Lillie Muehlstein Sykora. He was baptized and confirmed in Stamford and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. On Aug. 20, 1960, he married Joan J. Rodeck in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Houston. Mr. Sykora was a former City of Houston fire fighter. He was a life member of the DAV and VFW and was a member of the American Legion in Burton. Survivors include his wife, Joan J. Sykora of Burton; sister-in-law, Carole Moore and husband Bob of Deer Park; niece, Sandra L. Sykora-Ross and husband Steven Ross of Austin; and great-nieces, Michelle and Amy Ross. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillie Sykora; brother, Donald D. Sykora; mother-in-law, Annie V. Cosgrove; sister-in-law, Anne Peed and husband Duane; nephew, Victor Muhl; his grandparents; and several aunts and uncles. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 in St. Mary s Catholic Church in Brenham with Father David Ivey, celebrant. The graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 in Forest Park Cemetery on Lawndale Avenue in Houston. The rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, Barbara Kokemoor Memorial Chairman, c/o Brenham National Bank, P.O. Box 2568, Brenham, TX 77834-2568 or Hospice, 705 S. Austin, Brenham, TX 77833. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
