Joyce Onell Schlabach Mantey was called home to the Lord on April 4, 2012 at the age of 74 years. Joyce and her twin brother, Sammy, were born August 26, 1937 in Brenham, Texas to Walter and Hilma Heins Schlabach. Joyce was baptized in Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine on December 20, 1949 and was confirmed in the same church on May 1, 1951. Joyce attended schools in Latium and Wesley, and later attended Burton High School. Joyce was united in marriage to Leon "Buddy" Mantey on May 12, 1957 in Brenham. This union blessed the couple with two children, Jo Ann and Clinton. From early childhood she worked in the family grocery store that her parents owned, first in Latium, and then later in Brenham. Joyce joined Leon in the family business, Mantey''s Appliance Service as the administrative assistant for the past 36 years. She was also in charge of CJ, the family dog. They were great companions, always looking out for each other when Leon and Clinton were out on service calls. She also had a craft and jewelry shop. She spent much of her spare time crafting items to display at many shows in the area, especially the Farmers Market in Brenham. Craft work was a real joy for Joyce. Another real joy was cooking. There were many hours spent thumbing through cookbooks and magazines for that next new recipe to try. Joyce loved visiting with people. She had many acquaintances from the shop and from the craft shows she attended, and just the public in general. She was always interested in what you had to say. Her main passion was spending time with her family. Joyce loved getting together for the holidays or just any time. She always had an overabundance of food, making sure everyone had plenty. She was there for everyone; it did not matter what the crisis was, she would rise to the occasion. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Hilma Heins Schlabach; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Steve and Lydia Mantey; brother and sister-in-law, Wollie and Esther Schlabach; brother, Sammy Schlabach, brother-in-law Wilburn Mantey; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Joyce Mantey; sister-in-law Mary Nell Mantey; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arthur and Bernice Mantey, and sister-in-law, Leona Roehling.
