On February 11, 2019, Lee E. Renfrow Bufkin, 96 years of age, peacefully passed into eternity at home in Brenham, TX. She now sees her savior, Jesus Christ, face to face.
Lee was born October 14, 1922 in Madison Parish near Tallulah, LA. She graduated from Tallulah High School in May of 1940 and entered Louisiana Tech University the following September graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1944. Lee and her husband David met at Louisiana Tech in 1940 and married April 23, 1944 in Marfa, TX where her husband was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. They were married 73 years, 8 months.
Lee was known for her love for Jesus, the desire to have all her family together, her love of beauty, classical music and her passion for fishing. She always wished she could dance. Lee loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed creating scavenger hunts for them on holidays. She had an infectious giggle and a mischievous twinkle in her eye! Lee also enjoyed business trips with David, who worked for Texas Eastern, traveling to many wonderful places in the world.
Lee lived in Tallulah, LA, Mansfield, LA, Shreveport, LA, Houston, TX and Brenham, TX. She was a faithful member and kindergarten teacher at Broadmoor Baptist Church, Shreveport; Tallowood Baptist Church, Houston; and First Baptist Church, Brenham where she enjoyed being a member of the Joy Sunday School class.
Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac David Bufkin, her parents, John Howard Renfrow and Rosalee Kuhn Renfrow: her sisters - Eunice Fowler, Ruby Crawford and Mary Reardon; a niece Mary Ardistine Fowler Beasley, and three nephews: John Fowler, Robert Crawford and Ed Reardon.
Lee is survived by two children: Peggy Bufkin Gerst and husband Robert of Houston, TX and David Michael Bufkin of San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Robert Derrick Gerst and wife Karen of Durango, CO; Richard Brian Gerst, also of Durango, CO and Kathleen Gerst Ham and husband Kevin of Houston, TX. She has four great-grandchildren: Caleb Michael Gerst, Durango, CO, Pacey Lee Ham, Avery Kathleen Ham and Reese Ann Ham – all of Houston, TX.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, Brenham. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 11:00 at First Baptist Church of Brenham with Pastor Troy Sikes officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.
