Lilia Lena Marie Hertel, 87, of Brenham, TX, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in Trinity Care Center in Brenham. Mrs. Hertel was born May 9, 1916, in Greenvine, TX, to Adolph and Lena Marie Steffen Mackenroth. She was baptized June 18, 1916, in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine by Pastor L. Hoefer and was confirmed March 29, 1931, in the same church by Pastor Carl Ziehe. She attended Boundary School. On Nov. 11, 1934, she was married to Willie Hertel in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine by Pastor Carl Ziehe. Mrs. Hertel was a faithful member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine and later transferred to Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham. She was a distributor for The Houston Chronicle and a dedicated Brenham Banner-Press carrier for 45 years. Mrs. Hertel was an avid bowler, loyal Sons of Hermann member and VFW Auxiliary member. Special thanks to Denise Woods, and caregivers at Trinity Care Center and Hospice. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Glenwood and Willie Mae Hertel and Charles and Vickie Hertel, all of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Daniel Engeling of Brenham; 5 grandchildren, Todd Hertel and wife Darlene, Craig Engeling and wife Karen, Jeri Lynn Bentke and husband Ronald, Lance Engeling and Dawn Hertel and special friend Michael Paul Williams III; 9 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Trevor and Tucker Hertel, Kyle and Ashley Bentke, Chad and Kari Anne Engeling, and Travis and Kellie Gonzales; sister-in-law, Olga Mackenroth of Nederland. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willie Hertel on May 22, 1981; sisters, Olga Arndt, Hulda Abel and Ella Abel; brothers, Otto, Adolph, Willie, Clinton, Grover and an infant brother; a half sister, Florence Davidson; and a great-grandson, Justin Engeling. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 21 in Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastors Blair Lundborg and Walter Schindehette officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pallbearers will be Todd Hertel, Craig Engeling, Lance Engeling, Ronald Bentke, Charles Mackenroth and Donald Mackenroth. Memorials may be given to Christ Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society or Hospice Brenham. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
