Lorene Kuck Sohns, 89, of Brenham, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, in Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village in Brenham. Mrs. Sohns was born January 12, 1915, at Yoakum, Texas, the daughter of Eilert and Bertha Sanitz Kuck. She was baptized into the Christian faith July 18, 1915, in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Yoakum, Texas, by Pastor H.C. Wolfsdorff and confirmed in the Lutheran faith June 8, 1930, in United Dr. Martin Lutheran Church, Shiner, Texas. Mrs. Sohns graduated from Shiner High School and Southwest Texas State University majoring in Elementary Education, continuing with additional courses at the University of Houston and Sul Ross State University, Alpine, Texas. For many years she taught in the elementary grades of Alamo School, Brenham Elementary and Alton School in the Brenham Independent School District. On July 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Billy J. Sohns in the United Dr. Martin Lutheran Church, Shiner, Texas, by Rev. Edwin Oehlke. They continued to make their home in Brenham during their retirement celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. Mrs. Sohns was a member of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham, St. Paul s Church Women, Ladies Aid and served on various committees in the church including Altar Guild, St. Paul s Library, Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. Lorene Sohns was the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband Billy Sohns; her parents; two sisters and their husbands, Clara and P.R. Otto, Shiner, Texas, and Hilda and John Schott, Yoakum, Texas; one brother and his wife, E.J. and Selma Kuck, Yoakum, Texas; nephews, Kenneth R. Otto and Clyde R. Otto and wife Mary Lou Otto, Shiner, Texas. She is survived by a niece, Joy Janak and husband Al Janak, Yoakum, Texas; niece-in-law, Barbara Otto, Shiner, Texas; nephew, Robert Sohns and wife Laura, Houston, Texas; great-nieces, Cheryl Otto, Shiner, Texas, Paula Jasek, Blessing, Texas, Carla and Tom Hornseth, San Antonio, Texas, Kristin Sohns, Houston, Texas; great-nephews, Dean Janak and wife Andrea, Flower Mound, Texas, Brian Janak and wife Evon, Spring, Texas, Keith Otto and wife Stacy of Schulenburg, Texas, Wayne Otto and wife Christie, Smithville, Texas, David Otto and wife Lee Ann, Shiner, Texas; six great-great-nieces and nephews, Alyssa and Erica Otto, Schulenburg, Brooke and Lane Otto, Smithville, Texas, Allison and Grayson Janak, Flower Mound, Texas, Demi and Cory Janak, Spring, Texas, Jennifer and Lance Otto, Shiner, Texas, and Kyle Hornseth, San Antonio, Texas. Funeral service for Mrs. Sohns will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24 in St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastors Lawrence Bade and Kim Little-Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Serving as pallbearers will be Al Janak, Dean Janak, Brian Janak, Keith Otto, Wayne Otto and Kenneth Landua. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be David Otto and Douglas Borchardt. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church Radio and TV Ministries. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., Brenham.
