Lula Hurt

January 3, 1916 — October 19, 2007

On Friday, October 19, 2007, Lula Mai Cherry Hurt, at the age of 91, found peace and comfort as she left this world for her heavenly home. She died at her home in Magnolia, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Hurt was born January 3, 1916, in McKinney, Texas, to Thomas Henry and Mai Byrd Cade Dorsey. She attended schools in Caddo, Oklahoma and graduated from high school in Wylie, Texas. On January 5, 1946, she was married to T.I. Hurt in McKinney. Mrs. Hurt was foremost a Christian of strong faith and a dedicated servant of our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was baptized in 1950 at First Baptist Church in Brenham, where she dedicated 47 years of service to various groups including Girls Auxiliary, church choir, Sunday school, WMU, Bible school director, and Joyful Sound. She later became a member of First Baptist Church of Tomball, where she was active in Sunday school and the senior chorus. Mrs. Hurt was also a devoted wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother and a caring friend, and she leaves a legacy of memories to be cherished by her friends and family. Survivors include daughters, Sally Beckendorf and husband Mark of Magnolia and Cheri Duncan and husband Jim of Austin; grandchildren, Annie Beckendorf, Thad Beckendorf, Sara and Matt Prause and Rebecca and Aaron Travis; great-grandchildren, Madison Travis, Peyton Travis, Thomas Prause and Allison Prause; brother, Myron Edward Buddy Dorsey and wife Billie Ann of DeSoto; sisters, Ruby Dale Garcia of San Marcos and Mary Jo Gibbs of Hawkins; sisters-in-law, Joyce Powell of Houston, Odessa Poston of McKinney and Betty Dorsey of Mineola; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, T.I. Hurt; granddaughter, Lara Cherry Duncan; brother, Thomas Henry Dorsey, Jr.; and sisters, Jack Delilah Riddell and Maggie Leona Tootsie Willis. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Memorial Oaks Chapel with Mike Habermehl officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Pallbearers will be Dr. Sidney Burrus, Tony Holland, Joe Powell, Gary Waddell, Jim Poston and Hugh Holland. Honored friends are Ed and Lucille Boettcher, Wilfred and Gladys Schumacher, Dick and Georgia Haskel, Joyce Rose, and Rodsley Ortiz. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
