Marie Sommerfield

Marie Schwartz Smmerfield, the last surviving child of Henry and Louise Gerke Schwartz, passed away on July 28, 2003, after a long, valiant battle with leukemia. She was 83 years of age. Marie was born on Dec. 19, 1919, in Washington County, TX. She was baptized and confirmed in Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn. She attended William Penn schools. On June 16, 1938, Pastor P. Gogolin united her in marriage to Raymond Schulze. He preceded her in death on July 6, 1949. On Oct. 15, 1950, Pastor P. Gogolin united her in marriage to Leslie Sommerfield. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1982. Unto this union three children were born. Marie was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ruth Circle, taught Bible school and Sunday school. She was also an active member in Ladies Quilting. Marie was also an avid gardener, and she worked outside the home as a cook/waitress at various restaurants in Brenham. She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Sommerfield and husband Keith Ellender of Sulphur, Louisiana; her sons, Jimmie Sommerfield and wife Lorna and James Sommerfield and wife Glenda, all of Brenham; grandchildren, Jessica Sommerfield, J.R. Sommerfield and Joyce Sommerfield, all of Brenham. She is also survived by her aunt, Mary Pahmiyer and husband August of Brenham; sisters-in-law, Verna Mae Schwartz of Caldwell and Welma Schwartz, Lillie Weiss, Lena Rodenbeck and Celesta Rosner, all of Brenham; brother-in-law, Almot Sommerfeld and wife Sydonia of Brenham; special friend, Rosalie Sommerfield of Brenham; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, Marie was preceded in death by three brothers, Lonnie, Harold and Wilbert Schwartz; and four sisters. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 30 in Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastor Arnon Lundborg officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. today. Pallbearers will be Mike Baca, David Chovanec, David Dahmann, Nicholas Hoffman, Larry Schulze, Harold Schwartz Jr., Eugene Sefcik, Albert Sommerfield Jr., and Jimmie W. Sommerfield. Honorary pallbearers will be Rosalee Fuchs, Rosalie Sommerfield and the ladies of Christ Lutheran Quilting Circle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Hospice of Brenham or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
