Marie Emma Peterson Weiss, 94, of Lindale, died Dec. 19, 2004, in Tyler. Mrs. Weiss was born Dec. 9, 1910, in Lexington, to Edward Henry and Emma Rosalie Retzlaff Peterson. She was a graduate of Pawnee High School in Pawnee, earned her bachelor s degree from Southwest Texas in San Marcos and earned her master s degree at Sam Houston. On Aug. 18, 1940, she was married to August Weiss in Pawnee. She taught a total of 41 years with 25 years in the Brenham Independent School District. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brenham, past member and former president of the Pilot Club, and member of Brenham Fine Arts League, the Louise Giddings Chapter of Retired Teachers Association, the Brenham University Women and the African Violet Society. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and George Williford of Lufkin and Patricia and Jack Purl of Lindale; 5 grandchildren, Jan Marie and Brady Simmons, Steven and Stacy Purl, Todd and Molly Purl, Jeffrey August and Andreia Williford and Beth Ann Purl; 3 great-grandchildren, Mary Emma Simmons, Caden Jacob Simmons and Hannah Kathleen Purl; brother, John W. Peterson of Kerrville; and sister, Emma Louise Voges of San Antonio. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, August Weiss, June 26, 1967; brothers, W.H. Peterson and Frank Peterson; and sister, Flora Cunningham. The family will receive visitors from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22 in First United Methodist Church in Brenham with Rev. Gloria Lear officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Pallbearers will be Henry Kuecker, Kenneth Pieper, Brady Simmons, Steven Purl, Todd Purl, Jeff Williford, Jan Simmons and Beth Purl. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church in Brenham.
