Marvin Wills, Sr.

Marvin Combs Wills, Sr., 75, of Brenham, died March 1, 2005, in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Mr. Wills was born May 9, 1929, in San Marcos, Texas, to Edwin C. and Cora W. Haman Wills. He was baptized in Westover Baptist Church in San Marcos. Mr. Wills attended Westover Schools, San Marcos High School and Southwest Texas State University. He was a 1957 graduate of Texas A&M University Game Warden Cadet Training Academy. On Oct. 10, 1953, he married Marice Boyett in San Marcos. He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a retired deacon. In 1954, Mr. Wills was employed by Texas Game Fish and Oyster Commission. On June 1, 1957, he began his service as state game warden in Washington County, where he served for 36 years until his retirement. He was a charter member of Texas Game Warden Association and was Region IX charter director. In 1973 he was chosen as the Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of Washington County, and in 1991 he received the National Water Safety Congress Appreciation Award. Mr. Wills was also a member of the Washington County Peace Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Marice Wills of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Katie Wills of Gatesville; daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Jay Sams of Cat Spring; grandchildren, Phyllis Sams and Jason Sams, both of Cat Spring and Sarah Wills and Rachael Wills, both of Gatesville; brother and sister-in-law, Marion H. and Florrie Wills of San Marcos; sister, Minnie M. Howard of Martindale; and special friends, Lorea Myrick, Owen and Joan Zeiss and Sally Moody, all of Brenham. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Fred C. Wills and Edwin C. Wills, Jr. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 3 in Calvary Baptist Church in Brenham with Larry Embry and Bob Craig officiating. The graveside service will be at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3 in San Marcos City Cemetery in San Marcos with Jackson Boyett officiating. The family will receive visitors from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pallbearers will be David Byrd, Craig Hunter, Mark Simmons, Gary Beasley, Charles Ray Smith, Owen Zeiss, Sammy DeStephano and Earl Pearson. Honorary pallbearers will be all Texas Game Wardens, Jimmy Robinson, deacons of Calvary Baptist Church, Calvin Meyer, Jeff Zeiss, Darrell Meyer, Royce Jurries, Otto Wehring, Steve Musser and Billy Rosenbaum. Memorials may be given to Calvary Baptist Church in Brenham or Texas Game Warden Association Scholarship Fund. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
