Mildred Louise Kalkhake, 90, of Shelby, passed away November 21, 2014 at Oak Haven Assisted Living in Industry. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, November 24, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby, with Pastor Art Weiss officiating. Burial will follow in the Shelby Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday evening at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Mrs. Kalkhake was born January 25, 1924 in Shelby to Paul and Mary Mueller Sulzmann. She was baptized by Pastor M. C. Hoermann on April 15, 1924 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby, where she was confirmed Sept. 11, 1938 by Pastor Julius Bosshard. She continued membership there until her death. Mildred attended Skull Creek and Shelby area schools, and on March 26, 1944, she was married to Wilbert Kalkhake, Sr. at St. John Lutheran Church in Warrenton by Pastor Julius Bosshard. For over 20 years, Mildred and her husband owned and operated Wilbert''s Café in Shelby, where she would cook and serve delicious fried chicken and other dishes for her customers. Gardening and spending time with her family were favorite pastimes. Mildred worked hard all of her life, and was kind and caring to everyone around her. She enjoyed spending time with her special pet companions, Schatzie and Blackie. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Kalkhake of Shelby, and special friend Dennie Marek of Industry; daughter and son-in-law Doris and Emory Shead of Navasota; son and daughter-in-law Wilbert Jr. PeeWee and Patsy Kalkhake of Brenham; grandchildren: Nathan Kalkhake and wife Halee, Heath Kalkhake and wife Mandy, Kevin Kalkhake and wife Tiffany, and Jarrod Kalkhake and friend Ashley Manley, all of Brenham; Chad Shead and wife Rachel, and Elizabeth Weaks and husband Slade, all of Magnolia; great-grandchildren: Jackson and Kaiden Kalkhake, Mason Kalkhake, Briar and Blakely Kalkhake, Leyton and Collin and Tyler Weaks, and Wyatt Shead; sisters Gladys Allcorn of Huntsville, and Gertrude Huebel of Columbus. She is also survived by a special niece, Shirley Schultz, and special friends Ann Aschenbeck and Carolyn Bruening of Shelby. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert Kalkhake, Sr.; sisters, Ora Nell Kalkhake and Lillian Barron; brothers-in-law Herman Kalkhake, Edward Allcorn, Wayne Barron, and Virga Huebel, and nephews Glenn Huebel, Raymond Schultz, and Elroy Wiecker. Mrs. Kalkhake''s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby, to Hospice Brazos Valley, the Ameriacan Diabetes Founation, or any favorite charity.
