Momo Iwakiri Nebel, age 93, passed away peacefully at the Wesleyan Estrella Independent Living facility in Georgetown, Texas, on August 24, 2018. A graveside service will be held at Atkinson Cemetery in Chappell Hill on Friday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m.
Momo was born in Chualar, California and spent her childhood in the surrounding area. During World War II, she and her family were held in a confinement camp for Japanese-Americans in the Arizona desert. After their release, she graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in education. She later attended graduate school at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. She began her teaching career in California , but quickly determined that she wanted to work overseas. She spent the next five years teaching in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Haiti. It was in Haiti where she met her husband-to-be, Robert E. Nebel. They were married in Jefferson City, Missouri, and first settled in Houston, followed by Chappell Hill, and then Brenham.
Momo was an inspiration to many of those with whom she came in contact. She volunteered tirelessly in her church; the historical society, library, and museum; and her daughters’ activities. An avid traveler, she enjoyed journeying around the world with her husband and daughters, learning about different cultures, while seeking out additions to her collection of antiques and old books. A passion for gardening led to her certification as a Master Gardener.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Robert E. Nebel, and daughters: Marsha Scott and son-in-law Keith, Bobbie Nebel, and Heidi Starbuck and son-in-law Stacy, grandchildren: Tyler Scott, Matthew Scott and wife Marsha, and sister-in-law Susie Iwakiri.
Funeral arrangements for Momo Iwakiri Nebel are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main, Brenham.
