Myrtle Mertz Winkelmann, 92, widow of Reinhard C. Winkelmann, passed away on January 10, 2014, at Brenham Rest Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, January 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church of New Wehdem, with Pastor Jill Vivroux officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held Sunday, January 12, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Myrtle was born April 13, 1921 in Welcome, Texas to Edwin and Hilda Bender Mertz. She was baptized on November 30, 1922 and confirmed on April 14, 1935 in Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome. On November 29, 1939, she married Reinhard C. Winkelmann at St. James Lutheran Church of New Wehdem, where she was a faithful member until her death. Myrtle was a member of the Martha Circle, taught Sunday School, Jr. Lutherans, and Vacation Bible School. Myrtle and Reinhard enjoyed dancing and were long-time members of the Top Cat Dance Club. Gardening, playing cards and dominoes, and sewing were some of her favorite past times. She also enjoyed her membership in the Austin County Home Demonstration Club. Myrtle loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. Gatherings at the Winkelmann farm were held often. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Alana and Norman Winkelmann, son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Sharon Winkelmann all of Brenham; grandchildren: Kim and David Sommerfeld of Brenham, Dena and Michael Hill of Texarkana, Phillip and Karen Winkelmann of Ridgway, CO, Chris and Tina Winkelmann of Boyertown, PA, and Tara and Lamar White of The Woodlands; great-grandchildren: Catherine and Caroline Young, Marian, Jacob and Abigail Hill, Andrew and Kaitlyn Winkelmann, Will, Eric, Alysse, Jordan, Tomas and Tristen Winkelmann and Kayleigh White. sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws: Anita Bender, Esther Dahmann, Erline and Ernest Wellmann, Lee Roy and Delores Winkelmann and Odell and June Winkelmann along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and brother-in-laws: Elda and Bennie Gajeske, and Gladys and Delphine Schilling; sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws: Ida and Bill Schwartz, Willie and Alita Winkelmann, Raymond and Louise Winkelmann, Wilbert and LaVerna Winkelmann, Henry Bender, Freddie Dahmann and two nieces and two nephews. Pallbearers are: Marcus Bender, Douglas Dahmann, Ronnie Gajeske, Glen Schilling, Wade Wellmann, Kevin Winkelmann, Kirby Winkelmann, and Robert Winkelmann. Honorary Pallbearers are: Rick Cano, Michael Cano and Eric Cano. Memorials may be given to St. James Lutheran Church of New Wehdem or Hospice Brazos Valley. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham, Tx.
