Oscar Lonnie "Jack" Sommers, Jr., 88, husband of Bette Jo Powledge Sommers, died October 23, 2014 at Brenham Nursing and Rehab. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 27, 2014 at First Baptist Church of Brenham, with Charlie Matejowski and Troy Sikes officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Sunday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Mr. Sommers was born October 19, 1926 in the William Penn Community of Washington Co. to Oscar Louis and Rhea Horstmann Sommers. He was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn, and confirmed at St. Paul''s Lutheran Church in Brenham. On June 5, 1948, he was married to Bette Jo Powledge. Mr. Sommers attended Texas A&M University, and served his country in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He was a rancher, farmer, cotton gin owner and grain elevator owner. Active in his community, Mr. Sommers was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, the Independence Heritage Society, and a founding member of the Salt Grass Trail Ride Association. He also served as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. He was the founder of the Farm and Ranch Supply and Triple F Feeds, and was a member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Assoc. Mr. Sommers was a proud Aggie alumni. Family trips in the RV brought him great enjoyment, as did his skilled woodworking abilities. An avid antique collector and dealer, he operated The Pine and Calico Antique Store. A faithful member of First Baptist Church of Brenham, Oscar served as deacon, and sang in the choir for over 45 years. Survivors include his wife, Bette Sommers of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law Oscar and Marilyn Sommers of The Woodlands; daughters Gail Baker of Brenham; Sunday Sommers and David Rosen of Guanajuato, Mexico; Ginny and Donald Gaskamp of Brenham; brother and sister-in-law Clyde and Elaine Sommers of Brenham; sister and brother-in-law; Audrey and Russel Boney of Brenham; grandchildren: Lauren Baker, Ashley Sommers, Colt Sommers, Jake Gaskamp, and Sam Gaskamp; great-grandchildren Zaden Moon and Nolan Branon. He was preceded in death by sisters Mary Helen Sommers, and Maydell Curry. Serving as pallbearers are Colt Sommers, Jake Gaskamp, Sam Gaskamp, Ken Sommers, Jeff Sommers, Ross Sommers, and Doyle Dahmann. Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church of Brenham.
