Raymond Lee Gibbs, Sr., 83, of Brenham, died April 7, 2003, in the V.A. Hospital in Waco. Mr. Gibbs was born Feb. 22, 1920, in Unitcia, TN, to David Alonza and Alice Ward Gibbs. He was baptized in New Providence Baptist Church in Dutch Valley, TN. During World War II, he served with the United States Marines in the South Pacific Combat Campaigns receiving two presidential citations and the Purple Heart. He served seven years, attaining the rank of master gunnery sergeant. Mr. Gibbs was a member of First Pentecostal Church in Brenham, the VFW James F. Dillon Post, the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He was self-employed as a refrigeration technician. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Gibbs of Brenham; sons and daughters-in-law, Delton and Marcia Chamberlain of Metamora, MI, Raymond Gibbs, Jr. of Brenham and David and Dawn Gibbs of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Bill Brooks of Franklin, NC; sister, Nell Leinart of Kingston, TN; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 11 in Memorial Oaks Chapel with Merlin Swan officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Chappell Hill. The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10. Pallbearers will be David Gibbs, Ray Gibbs, Jr., Ray Gibbs, III, Aaron Gibbs, David Gibbs and Daniel Gibbs. Memorials may be given to First Pentecostal Church in Brenham. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
