Roger Gene Hackney, 84, husband of Helen Hackney, died October 24, 2014 in Brenham. Graveside services are scheduled for 1:45 p.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Roger Hackney was born May 7, 1930 in Middletown, Ohio to Grover and Effie Roberts Hackney. He was baptized into the Christian faith in October of 1959. Roger served his country in the U. S. Army. He was married to Helen Ewing on November 17, 1950. Mr. Hackney was employed as a machinist by the Texas Highway Dept. for 43 years. A devoted husband and father, Roger put his family first, especially treasuring time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved working with his hands, building things for others to enjoy. He worked diligently for his church, helping anyone who needed his assistance. Survivors include his wife, Helen B. Hackney of Brenham; daughters Susan Hackney of CenterPoint, and Deborah Lynn Benge and husband Brad of Waller; grandchildren Jacob Chad McLain, Jared Benge, and Clayton Benge; great-grandchildren Tanner Donahoe and Ashlyn Rhodes; brothers Gordon Hackney and Paul Hackney, both of Abilene. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, George Hackney, Donald Hackney, and John Allen Hackney.
