Roy Schlabach

Roy Ernest Schlabach, 86, husband of Verline Schulze Schlabach, died November 5, 2009 at his residence. Born October 19, 1923 in Shelby, Texas to Edwin and Frieda Meischen Schlabach, he was baptized March 24, 1924 in his parents home by Pastor M. C. Hoermann, and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby on September 13, 1936 by Pastor Julius Bosshard. He attended Skull Creek School through grade 7, and obtained his GED after completing service in the U. S. Army during World War II. He attended Blinn College for one year, and later was married to Verline Schulze on July 18, 1948 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby by Pastor William Feller. Mr. Schlabach was employed as a sales representative in the food industry. He was an active member of St. Peter s Lutheran Church of Bay City, St. James Lutheran Church of Houston, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham, and St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby. He served on the church councils in Houston, Brenham, and Shelby, and as president of the church council in St. James in Houston, as well as St. Paul of Shelby, where he was a partner in the lay ministry. In addition, he served as president and vice-president of the Shelby Volunteer Fire Dept. for 6 years, and commander and vice-commander of the Shelby American Legion Post #602 for 7 years. As a community volunteer, he was active in Bread Partners and Meals on Wheels, and served as Pct. Chairman for the Fayette Co. Republican Party. A member of Shelby Sons of Herman, he was also a member of the VFW Post #7104 in Brenham. Roy was proud to have been a charter member of the Bellville VFW Post #6522 and the Shelby American Legion Post #602. He was always a supporter of those Houston Astros. Roy and Verline enjoyed traveling around the country. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Verline Schlabach; son Michael R. Karla Schlabach of Kerrville; daughter Sheryl L. Dennis Durfey of Smithville; grandchildren Michael Ray Schlabach, Jr., Matthew Ryan Schlabach Meredith, Sara Eliese Durfey; stepgrandsons: Dwayne Allen Durfey and children Shaylee and Dallin, Steven Craig Durfey and son Aiden; sisters-in-law Katherine Schulze, and Leander Schlabach; brother-in-law Burnie Schulze, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Frieda Schlabach; brothers Harry, Milton, and Coivin Schlabach; sisters Viola Schlabach, Pearl Aschenbeck; brothers-in-law August Aschenbeck Sr. and Melvin Schulze; sisters-in-law Elsa Schlabach, Benita Schlabach, Ora Lee Schlabach, and Burdine Schulze. Funeral services for Roy Ernest Schlabach of Shelby will be held at 1:00 p.m, Saturday, November 7, 2009 in St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby with Pastor Linda Mosley officiating. Burial will follow in Shelby Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will take place Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Serving as pallbearers are Glenroy Ebner, Robert Schlabach, August Aschenbeck, Jr., Alfred Kelm, Wilkins Aschenbeck, Wendell Rudloff, Larry Schlabach, Darrell Schulze, Roger Schulze, and Mark Schulze. Honorary pallbearers are Mr. Schlabach s grandchildren and his nieces. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Shelby or to Hospice Brazos Valley of La Grange. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham. 979 836-4564.
