Sue Boehnke

Sue Ann Boehnke, 68, of Brenham, died July 6, 2004, in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Mrs. Boehnke was born Sept. 1, 1935, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to John Ulysses and Jewell Wynn Nelson. She was a graduate of Hawkins High School, where she was salutatorian of her graduating class and a member of the National Honor Society. Mrs. Boehnke was a graduate of Tyler Junior College, where she was a drum major for the Tyler Apache Belles, and a graduate of North Texas State University. She won the title of Miss Tyler and participated in the Miss Texas Pageant. On April 8, 1955, she married Ben Wayne Boehnke in Tyler. Mrs. Boehnke developed the drill team program at Blinn College and served as its first director. She also taught art and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brenham. Survivors include her husband, Ben Boehnke of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Bodley Thornton of Katy; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Tonya Boehnke of Fort Worth; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and James Janak of Humble; sister, Joyce Coyle-Cosby of Shreveport, Louisiana; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Ulysses Nelson and Jewell Nelson Hunter. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 10 in First United Methodist Church in Brenham with Dr. Wesley Wellborn and Rev. Sam Duree officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 9 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pallbearers will be B. Paul Thornton, Mitchell Boehnke, Herman Borchardt, Jimmie Hahn Jr., Gilbert Smith, Marvin Kunkel, Ted Low and Leroy Dreyer. Honorary pallbearers will be Elverna Borchardt, Sweetie Grubbs, Joan Been, Buddy Hamrick, and Larry Keller. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Sue Boehnke Scholarship Fund at Blinn College. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
