Terry Lee Newcomer

Terry Newcomer, 78, passed away on June 27, 2023 in Brenham, Texas.  

A memorial service will be held on Friday, 6/30/23 at 11:00 am and will be held at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham, TX.  A reception will follow immediately after the service.

Terry was born on May 23, 1945 to Roy and Verna Newcomer in York, Pennsylvania.  

At the core of his being, Terry Newcomer contained a force that challenged the boundaries of what most people would call drive or conviction. What he had was something more. His insatiable persistence to work towards what was right existed outside of any conscious choice; it was simply the man he was. When faced with a seemingly unfair or insurmountable obstacle that created a barrier between where he was and where he intended to go, he never stopped to complain, instead he sized up the job and went to work.

 The unyielding drive he possessed was a constant force that left its fingerprints throughout his life. The first milestone in his life that his unique drive served him well was when he was called upon to serve his country during a time of war. Being young and patriotic he proudly answered the call and committed to serving in the United States Air Force. He served his tour of duty overseas and fortunately found his way back home safely to his family. In the years beyond his service, Terry went on to achieve what he would view as the greatest accomplishment of his life. That accomplishment, of course, was meeting and marrying the love of his life Diana Newcomer, and together raising their six beautiful children. Providing for Diana and his children became the bedrock of his world. Eventually, after years of dedication and hard work his persistent efforts found him success as the owner of a thriving small business. After having several years of success, a devastating economic downturn cost him his company and livelihood. Though, and as anyone that ever known Terry would have predicted, that was just another obstacle that only temporarily slowed him down. True to his character, he refused to give up and he eventually went on to rebuild his small business and find success once again.

 Terry has had countless ups and downs throughout his life, but his multi-textured journey has left us all with an endless well of stories to tell. These will be stories we tell one another around campfires, sitting around the tree on Christmas day, or just over a drink as we laugh and cry while sharing our memories of him. In his honor, the following are a few examples of watermark moments from his life that will assuredly live on in story form: The period in his life after leaving the USAF when he became a minor league baseball player, the time and dedication he devoted to being a valued member of the local school board in effort to affect change, any of the years he gathered his family during the holidays and asked them to contribute to their church so they could help less fortunate families, or any one of the countless “adventure” vacations he took his entire family on that have never failed to invoke laughter. There is one last notable piece of Terry’s story that is worthy of sharing to complete the picture of the man we lost – Overlaying the countless moments that he displayed his unbelievable drive to keep pushing forward in an effort to provide for his family and across all the selfless acts he was involved with during his efforts to help people around him in need, these were all things he did while fighting a personal and debilitating battle with multiple sclerosis. The thread of indomitable force driving him was a constant throughout his life and it was a piece of him that refused to be hindered, it was still evident within him during his final days, and his fierce love for his family had to be at its core.  

 Terry was the most wonderful Dad and his legacy lives on through John and Cheryl, Chris, Jenni and David, Jeremy and Jenn,  Brian and Brittany, and Michael. 

 He was a doting grandfather to Elizabeth, Devin, Triniti, Haylie, McKenna, Reilly, Neely, Rory, Shepherd, Major, Mason, Boone, Gavin and Ryder.

 He is preceded in death by his father, Roy William Newcomer, his mother, Verna Irene Newcomer, his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Bob Fetrow, his mother-in-law Joyce Cerny, his brother in law, Steven Cerny and his granddaughter, Raelyn Cutbirth.

 He will always be remembered for his kind and caring spirit, and his wonderful “Newcomer” humor.
