Terry W. Overton was born in Corpus Christi on September 16, 1948 to Charles William Overton and his wife Mary Louella Sawyers. His siblings were Bill, John, Margaret (died as an infant) and James.
He attended Miller High School where he played Coronet in the band. After graduation he took a few jobs learning things... such that the rest of his life he knew how to "do stuff". He was appreciated for fixing broken anything, including computers and cars when they were still mechanical.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1971 and was trained as a 621-airplane mechanic. His ship, the Roosevelt, was an aircraft carrier posted in the Mediterranean. He was tapped to be on the traveling crew for the Blue Angels and had adventures all over Europe.
Later, on land in Florida he attended Pensacola College classes to become a law officer. He exited the Navy, Honorably Discharged as a System OMA Technician. He was hired in Orange, Texas as a police officer. He had a few tales of his first years!
When his first marriage ended, he moved to Kerrville, Texas in the same capacity. But after a few years he moved to the Austin area for his "replacement wife" and took a job as a cop at City of Lakeway. After 6 years at Lakeway, he retired from this real job as a cop and found something fun to do with his, now spare time. As his hobby was photography, a job at Wal-Mart for a couple of years filled the bill. He managed the photo lab, got to work on all of the machines and generally came home happy.
He had an interest in weaponry, history, science fiction and cameras. He did not hunt, but he did play some golf in his 40's. Terry was a reader with more books than our home could hold...same with his classical music collection.
He was married to Margery for 20 years and they had two sons, Tery W. Overton Jr. (T.J.) and Todd Alan Overton. T.J. had one daughter Michaela Linn Overton... a granddaughter for Terry.
Terry was married to Fritzi (Myra Kunkel Friedman) for 35 years. He embraced her son by a prior marriage, as his own. The two of them enjoyed similar politics, target shooting, and Jack's daughter, Kaleigh Fay Cox! Terry was the only Grandfather she ever knew and they had fun together especially when she was growing up.
Terry and Fritzi worked on their respective genealogies together for 12-15 years. They traveled up to the north for her family and over to the south for his. He drove to cemeteries, courthouses and tracked down distant relatives for more information. They both belonged to heritage organizations for several years.
Terry is survived by his wife, Fritzi, step son John W. Cox Jr. (Jack), his granddaughters Michaela Linn Overton and Kaleigh Fay Cox, his brother James Overton and brother Bill Overton, his sister-in-law Fay Kunkel Garlick and husband James Michael Garlick, 2 sons T.J. and Todd Overton and his loved and devoted dog, Barkley.
Terry was strong, silent, and protective of his family and the Biblical Job had nothing on him. Terry suffered many more health issues than ever showed up on the surface. The family thanks Dr. Chafizadeh for keeping Terry's heart beating for an extra 20 years after both heart attacks and the triple bypass.
Also, we thank Dr. Albino, who kept him going for 4 years after terminal cancer diagnosis in 2020.
Our hats off for 3 Oaks Hospice. Terry's last 3 painful days would have been worse without their attention.
