Velma Y. "Lew" Lewellyn went to her eternal resting place in heaven on September 28, 2010 in College Station Medical Center after coronary complications. Lew, the former Velma Yvonne Carter, was born November 26, 1925, the youngest of three daughters of Lester Jack and Nellie M. Carter, formerly of Jasper, Webb City, and Carthage, Missouri. She was a graduate of Webb City High School, Class of 1943, in Webb City, Mo. Lew married Trueman F. Lewellyn, a World War II vet from Webb city, Mo., on Sept. 11, 1945. They have two daughters, Lynda Gay Dement and Debra Debby Joy Barker. In 1951 Trueman and Lew moved their young family to Houston/Pasadena, Tx. area. Lew retired in 1981 from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. as executive secretary to the General Manager of Network Distribution Services NDS, after 24 years of dedicated service. Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Gay Hill, outside of Brenham. Lew was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Trueman F. Lewellyn; parents Lester and Nellie Carter; sisters and brothers-in-law Ellen Marie and Tan P. Power of Baytown, and Betty Faye and Jesse L. Fowler of Montrose, Colorado, and sister-in-law Pam Herd of Carterville, MO. Lew is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Lynda and Steve Dement of Pasadena; Debby and Ed Barker of Katy; five beloved grandchildren: Stacey Dement Tyler and husband Rob of Kingwood; Jodie Dement Nutt and husband Jason of Willis; Keri Dement Brooks and husband Jason Jay of Houston; Brad Barker and partner Colleen Farley of Katy, and Brian Barker and partner Brandy Henderson of Hockley. Brian is presently living and working in Angola, Africa. Surviving great-grandchildren are: Taylor Dement Pate, Timothy Ashlyn and Tray Tyler; Johnny, Jalyn, Jenise, Joshua, Janaye, and Josiah Nutt; Kora, Tennyson and soon to be Kennedy Brooks, and Collin Barker. Surviving extended family: Codi Keck, Jordan Henderson, Ashlee and Austin Riegler. Also surviving is sister-in-law and brother-in-law Cherry and John Furry of Webb City, MO. And brother-in-law John Herd of Carterville, MO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews from Missouri and her house companion, kitty cat "Muffy". The family wants to extend their continued love and gratitude to all of her special friends from First United Methodist Church of Brenham, Tx., to her wonderful friends and neighbors, and to AMA Home Health Care and their dedicated, caring workers. The family will celebrate with a memorial service upon the return of her grandson from Africa on October 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made in Lew''s honor to Brazos Valley Hospice or First United Methodist Church of Brenham.
