Verlie Wegner

Verlie Wegner, 87, widow of Edward Wegner, died April 12, 2017 in College Station.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, April 15, 2017 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton, with Pastor Glen Schoeneberg officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Oaks Chapel.

Verlie Wegner was born July 8, 1929 in Carmine to Gustav and Alma Krause Hinze. She was baptized and later confirmed at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, where she married Edward Wegner on February 22, 1948.

Verlie was a registrar at Winedale Historical Center. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Burton until her death.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Linda Wegner of Houston; Richard and Olga Wegner of Burton, and daughter-in-law, Ellsie Wegner of Brenham; grandchildren: Mike (Jo) Wegner, Gene Hilton, Sofia (Derick) Nickerson, and Joseph Wegner; great-grandchildren: Willow Wegner, Julie (Brandon) Gayton, Angelina, Amya Nickerson, and Derick Nickerson, Jr. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Verlie was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; son, Joe Wegner; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayland (Mertle) Hinze, Elmo (Annie) Hinze, Leola (Ernst) J. Althaus, Delphine (Rosalee) Hinze, Wella Mae (Milton) Behnke; parents; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Serving as pallbearers are Mike Wegner, Joseph Wegner, Quirt Knittel, Dale Mertz, Jason Marwitz, and Fred Behnke.

Memorials may be directed to St. John’s United Church of Christ.
