Viola Wieghat

Viola A. Wieghat, 73, of Brenham, died Sept. 6, 2003, in Select Specialty Heights Hospital in Houston. Mrs. Wieghat was born to Alfred and Frieda Meyer Brauner on April 23, 1930, in the Greenvine community of Washington County. She was baptized June 29, 1930, in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine and was confirmed in the same church on Nov. 12, 1944. She attended the Greenvine School. On Oct. 30, 1948, she married Lonnie W. Wieghat in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters, Betty, Carol and Kay. Mrs. Wieghat worked retail positions at Citizens Pharmacy, New York Store and the Bo Peep Shop. After her retail career, she worked at Maddox Furniture Manufacturing Plant and later at the Blinn College cafeteria from which she retired. She enjoyed being a homemaker and cooking and canning. She also enjoyed dancing as long as she was able and was a member of the Polka of America Club. She was a member of the American Legion Post 48 Auxiliary, serving in various capacities including president from August 1996 to July 1997. She was a faithful member of local Lutheran congregations and belonged to their ladies circles. Mrs. Wieghat was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Lonnie W. Wieghat of Brenham; three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Gregg Hutton of Huntsville, Alabama, Carol Ann and Marvin Spreen of Brenham and Kay and Darrell Matthies of Brenham; seven grandchildren, Tracy Szymczak and husband Jay, Alicia Hilliard and husband John, all of Alabama, Mark Williams and wife Heather of Seabrook, Christopher Williams, Penny Spreen, Ashlie Matthies and Morgan Matthies, all of Brenham; four great-grandchildren, Alexandria Stone, Krystal Goad, Tommy Goad and Chelsey Szymczak, all of Alabama. She is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Wenzel and Elaine Brauner of Brenham; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Barbara Brauner of Hempstead, Allyne and Erwin Emshoff of Brenham, Malinda Naumann of Brenham, Nilah Wieghat of Houston, Ervin and Mae Ola Wieghat of Bedias, Arnold Wieghat of Houston, Henry Wieghat of Spring, William and Judy Wieghat of Flynn and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Raymond Brauner; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Wieghat and Lonnie Naumann; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Wieghat and Ellie Wieghat. The funeral service will be Monday, Sept. 8 at 2:00 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastor Blair Lundborg officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Pallbearers will be Christopher Williams, Mark Williams, Jay Szymczak, John Hilliard, Robert Brauner, Erwin Wayne Wieghat, Wayne Bethke, Onis Finke and Alfred Brauner. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
