Walter Ducky Mertins, 92, of Brenham, died Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Trinity Care Center in Brenham. Mr. Mertins was born June 20, 1914 in the William Penn Community, Washington County, Texas, to Herman and Alvina Marzhan Mertins. He was baptized in the Christian faith on July 6, 1914, Rev. J. H. Iverson, and confirmed on March 31, 1929 by Rev. C. J. Appel in Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn. On October 31, 1940, .he was married to Elsie Kohring in Bethlehem Lutheran Church by Rev, C. J. Appel. He was a graduate of Brenham High School and Blinn Junior College and received his bachelor and his master s degrees from Sam Houston State College in Huntsville. Mr.Mertins taught school in Washington County for 48 years, teaching in Chadwick, Armstrong, Washington and Brenham Schools. He was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn until 1965 and a member of Grace Lutheran Church where served on many boards, He had been a faithful member of The Lutheran Laymen s League for over 50 years. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Elsie Kohring Mertins of Brenham, sisters-in-law, Lydia Mertins, Oleta Mertins and Rosa Lee Lueckemeyer, all of Brenham. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Mertins was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Christoph, Willie and Herman Mertins and four sisters, Bertha Kohring, Martha Mertins, Clara Luedke and Hattie Gaskamp. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 4, at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastors Matthew Jacobs and William Holzer officiating, Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Pallbearers will be Carl Herman Mertins, Lester Mertins, Wally Wilson, Eugene Gaskamp, Glenn Luedke, and Daryl Lueckemeyer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Grace Lutheran Church of Brenham. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main Street in Brenham.
