Walter Taylor "Jerry" Vernon, 81, passed from Earth to God''s hands on November 26, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. Walter was born November 18, 1930 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Virgil and Mildred Taylor Vernon. After serving his country in the US Navy, Walter helped shaped the skyline of Houston through Vernon Masonry, which he founded in 1948. Walter was a member of the Associated Masonry Contractors of Houston, Masonry Council Contractors of America, The Texas Masonry Council, Association of General Contractors of Houston and The Bricklayers Local No. 7. He was also a member of the Reagan Masonic Lodge , Scottish Rite and Shriners for over 50 years. Walter was a founding member and served as a director of Houston Community Bank. He is survived by his cherished wife of 61 years, Nancy Vernon of Brenham; daughter Gwen and husband Reggie Brown; son Dwayne Vernon and wife Sue, all of Brenham, Texas. Grandchildren: Nicole Brown-Rausch, Chad Brown and Carrie Vernon-Warren of Brenham, Texas. Great-Grandchildren: Mason Rausch, Ashton Rausch, Hunter Warren, Shelbie Warren and Lillie Warren. Siblings: Peggy McMahan, Sandra Hollis and Donald Vernon. Walter is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mildred Vernon. Pallbearers include grandsons, Chad Brown and John Rausch, nephew Don Vernon, and close friends, Joe Meschwitz, Shannon Chapman and Todd Chapman. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2011 at Memorial Oaks Chapel, with Rev. Darren Donaldson officiating. Burial will take place at the Masonic Cemetery in Chappell Hill. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 30th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel Walter was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Brenham.
