Wilbert Meier

Wilbert Helmuth “Buddy” Meier, age 90, passed away on July 18, 2021 in Brenham. Buddy was born August 24, 1930 in Washington County to Charles and Mathilda Oevermann Meier.  He was baptized on October 19, 1930 by Pastor Adolph Walton at St. John’s Evangelical Church in Burton.  He was confirmed on Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 1945 at St. John’s Evangelical Reformed Church in Burton by Rev. Paul Knicker.  Buddy married Ruby Dornhoefer on May 30, 1954 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine by Rev. A.T. Kluge.

Buddy grew up on a farm in Washington County near Burton.  He went to Hohenwalde and Burton schools.  He helped build St. John’s Evangelical Reformed Church and worked at the Burton Cotton Gin.  He served his country as a corporal in the US Army from 1952 to 1954.  He was stationed at William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas.  After he was discharged from the Army, he worked for Blue Bell Creameries as a route salesman for 47 years.  He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham.

Buddy was a member of the Burton American Legion for over 60 years, where he helped make bar-b-que and sauce for the 4th of July celebration.  He was also a member of the Burton Volunteer Fire Department, Washington County Wildlife Society and Bread Partners of Washington County.

He enjoyed deer hunting and fishing.  In the spring you would find him in the garden growing enough vegetables to keep some and give some away. In the fall you could find him picking up pecans, then cracking and shelling them. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, often taking them to the farm in Winedale.

He is survived by his wife Ruby of 67 years; son and daughter-in-law Tim and Shirley Meier; daughter and son-in-law Evon and Roger Schulze; grandchildren Travis and wife Kristin Meier, Joshua Meier and fiancée Meghan Dowling; Amy Schulze Dahmann and husband Jonathan; Rebecca Schulze and Elizabeth Schulze; great-grandchildren Everett, Eli and Emma Dahmann; brother-in-law Herbert Koester; sister-in-law Ruth Meier and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister Anita; sisters and brothers-in law Aline and Lloyd Gerland, Alfrieda and Charlie Herzog; brother Wilfred; brother Carl and sister-in-law Bern Nell Meier; brother Erwin; nephew Bobby Herzog; parents-in-law Albert and Lydia Dornhoefer; sister-in-law Leolie Koester; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Evelyn and Allen Spies.

Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, July 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel.  The funeral service will be held Friday, July 23 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Pat Dietrich officiating.  Burial will be at Prairie Lea Cemetery followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall at St. Paul’s.

Serving as pallbearers are Travis Meier, Joshua Meier, Gary Spies, David Gerland, Dennis Gerland, Keith Meier, Carlton Meier, Charlie Franke, Robert Bockhorn and Jonathan Dahmann.

Honorary pallbearers will be all Blue Bell and former Blue Bell employees.

The family would like to thank the nurses, aides, therapists and staff of Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation and Hospice Brazos Valley for their care.   And a special thank you to Ruby Jackson for her gentle and loving care.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 305 W Third St, Brenham; Hospice Brazos Valley, 302 E Blue Bell Rd, Brenham; Burton American Legion Post 242, PO Box 395, Burton, TX 77835; or the charity of your choice.  Services are in the care of Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W Main, Brenham.
