Wilford L. O’Brien was born October 17, 1927 in Mulhall, OK to Glenn and Laura (Grace) O’Brien. Growing up and graduating in Agua Dulce in South Texas, he was a poor country boy with ambition, who was appointed manager of Corpus Christi Brick and Lumber before he was 30 years old. The oldest of 5, he was milking cows and working the family dairy and farm by the time he could walk. He rode his horse to school, with his baby sister riding on back. He was an excellent athlete, playing school sports and area adult leagues.
He was an expert builder, and enjoyed working with his hands, especially with wood. He was always helping others in any way he could with home repairs, church improvement, and whatever else.
Most importantly, he loved God and was secure in knowing his eternity in Heaven. He used his gifts to serve God and others. He made sure his family and children were raised to know Jesus and pass on his faith and belief.
He loved his family and relished being called Doe Doe by his grandkids.
He served in the U. S. Army in WWII, 20 plus years as manager for CC Brick and Lumber, 15 years as wholesale dealer for Mobil Oil, and served as Live Oak County Commissioner. Upon retirement, he served with Baptist Men to help build and rebuild churches.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Truett; children: Barbara (Gary) Hargrove of Corpus Christi; Allen O’Brien of Corpus Christi; Kent O’Brien (Teri) of Lakeway; Kay Walther (JD) of Houston; eight grandchildren; siblings Claude O’Brien (Angie) of Lubbock, and Carolyn Ross of Dublin.
The family wishes to express special appreciation and gratitude to neighbor Cal Allen and the nurses of AMA Home Care, and Hospice Brazos Valley for their love, care, and help.
Memorials may be directed to Faith Building, First Baptist Church of Brenham, or Hospice Brazos Valley.
