William Averitt

October 16, 1921 — March 23, 2005

William Hendrick Averitt, 83, of Brenham, died March 23, 2005, in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. Mr. Averitt was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Timpson, Shelby County, Texas, to Henry Arthur and Myrtle Lucy Hendrick Averitt. He was a graduate of Nacogdoches High School and attended Stephen F. Austin University. From May 30, 1942 to Dec. 13, 1945, he served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Averitt was employed for 35 years with Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1984. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Brenham and the American Legion in Somerville. Survivors include his wife, Betty Joyce Mays Averitt of Brenham; sons, Arthur Wayne Averitt and wife Vicki Lynne Averitt of Thorndale and William Michael Averitt and wife Katherine Lee Averitt of Temple ; daughters, Cheryl Lynn Danheim of Orange and Rebecca Ann Moorman and husband Robert Lawson Moorman of Brenham; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Arthur and Myrtle Lucy Hendrick Averitt; and a brother, Edward Arthur Averitt. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 25, in First United Methodist Church in Brenham with Wesley Welborn officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. The family will receive visitors from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pallbearers will be Darriel Jones, Howard Beck, David Averitt, B.R. McClenden, Ray Averitt, Frank Brock and Paul Averitt. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church in Brenham. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
